| [Rant] iPhone support
I have a problem with my iPhone where the volume up/down button on the side broke off. It's minor and I can adjust the volume in Settings but to get it fixed or replaced I have to send it to an Apple store or drive to one. The PROBLEM is that the closest one to me is Champaign, IL or St. Louis! I think ATT should be able to support these phones at the local office since there isn't one close. Who's idea was it to not let ATT support these phones? They sure as hell love to sell them but if you got a problem they wash their hands of it and tell you to contact Apple. |

| reply to fancydancer I am sure this is dictated in AT&T's contract with Apple. Apple has always liked to have control over every aspect of their products. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on the circumstance. What exactly, were you expecting? I don't see this as any deviation from the typical Apple we all know and either love or hate. |

In a perfect world I would like to have ATT service the phone at their local office when there is not an Apple Store to take it to. Wishful thinking, yes. |

| It's provided through my job. They furnish the phone and pay the bill but any support on it is left up to me. We switched from Sprint in March and if it was up to me, we would still be with them. But that however, is for another rant. |

1 edit | ATT does not service phones. They send them back to the manufacture for service. It would not be repaired any quicker even if the local ATT store took it because they would have to also mail it away. -- Republicans: less fiscally conservative than that other party. |

A 3 hour round trip ride to get a new phone, is it that bad? |

They ship you a likely refurbished phone, with just the main unit in the box. You switch the SIM, battery, and any other accessories to the newly shipped phone, then send the old one back in the same box with a paid postage label you slap over the one that came on the box. Typically takes 3-5 days to get the new phone on the free option. The express option for about $12 can get it to you in a day or 2. I chose that last time since the display on my Pantech Matrix was driving me nuts and it was close to the weekend. Had back luck with my first couple of those. It is the phone that travels with me the most and the current one seems to be holding up. So maybe I just got some lemons. I do seem to be warranty exchanging more phones than I ever have, in general. I miss the old Nokias that lasted forever. I would use the one I have in a box as my casual phone if modern networks still supported it. |

| reply to fancydancer I never used AT&T repair. I always have gone directly to the manufacturer and had to send it away (on my dime). It usually is back within a week or so. I also have a backup phone for just such occasions. It's my older phone, which fortunately takes the same battery. Even if it didn't, it's just a couple hours to charge it up.
I wouldn't trust AT&T to repair my phone anyway, they didn't manufacture it. -- Mom and Crockett...... I miss you both! |

| If the old one works at all, you keep it until the new one arrives with the box to ship the old one back. The process is usually relatively painless. The only painful part might be if you called the main service line, rather than the specific warranty exchange number. Usually, it's easier to get it from the store. -- deltree /y C:\*.* |

| reply to fancydancer So Apple told you to take it to a retail store 3h away? On laptops they overnight an empty box, you stick the laptop in, put on the postage paid overnight label and give it to Fed Ex. It's returned overnight, usually fixed the next day and back in Fed Ex's hands. Total time without computer can be just 2 days. Granted, it sucks to be without your phone, but if you don't want to do the drive ask Apple for mail-in service.
On laptops under warranty or AppleCare all that Fed Ex priority overnight is paid by Apple too. Haven't yet had service on my iPhone yet, crossing my fingers I don't need to... |
