fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | My issue with this.. ... I don't believe, for ANY REASON WHAT SO EVER, that our own personal property should be able to be used to track ANYONE for ANY REASON, PERIOD!
Either way, I have the GPS in my phone turned off anyway. Let them use the towers and try to get close..
And yea, I could care less just how much of a criminal someone is.. there is always a trade off to everything.. we're only in the real beginning of technology and future predictions are already coming true.. I don't care to allow my government the ability to EASILY use and abuse this type of information.. WE control the government, not the other way around.
Why not chip everyone and just get it over with already?

I'm hiking in the woods, fall and break my leg... fortunately I have cell reception, but I'm disoriented and unable to relay an exact position, just an approximation, like "about 60 minutes walk north of some mark post on a 20-mile trail"
In that situation I have no problem with my personal property being used to track me down.
...or maybe I'm in the back of a van speeding down the highway to some unknown location after being hit in the back of the head by some kidnappers... my hands are tied and I'm blindfolded, but I managed to get the phone out of my pocket and dial 9-1-1, I can't speak into the phone, but I need 9-1-1 to help me, or at least have a record of where my phone is going once they figure out what has happened.

If you believe the government or some other entity might use your phone to track you, why not also believe that they would lie to you about whether or not you are actually being tracked?

There is a difference between YOU asking for tracking, and THEM asking for you to track.. 911 tracks you - that's pretty obvious and acceptable.
My ISSUE is where they use technology against US...
Your own emergency instance is fine.. YOU have instigated the trace... but, law enforcement using your phone to track you.. um.. hasn't anyone figured out that we're still innocent until proven guilty? Has technology NOT been abused already a number of times? Unless someone is already 'guilty' of something, I really have a MAJOR issue with using private property in the course of an investigation or in the case of trying to track people. This gets much larger than some people here really comprehend.. there is also political corruption as well.. this is one reason where privacy is of the UTMOST importance... if you have people in power abusing this type of technology, they can use it to also harm their political opponents which can in turn be used to re-shape the political landscape.. (it's sad how many people have lost track of that fact)
Yes - the govt lies.. I'm surprised that more people here are not upset about this for SO many reasons... on SO many levels..
I can't believe three other people, here, responding are rolling over to the government.. um, there are IDIOTS running the government.. many people that shouldn't be in it in the first place.. and these are the dumbasses that are allowing this stuff to happen.. it all starts in congress...
Yes.. they lie.. | |

Law enforcement has the ability to search your house and car and seize your property if they get a warrant. They can also conduct physical surveillance (that is, follow you), track your license plate, or compel others to disclose evidence.
Now, if what Sprint was doing was allowing law enforcement to go "fishing" for crime without a warrant, I have a big problem with that.
If, on the other hand, Sprint was merely allowing law enforcement to collect evidence on individuals for which they have probable cause to suspect a crime (and have obtained a warrant for the person of interest), then I don't think this is a whole lot different than allowing police to search your house or follow you around.

I'm sorry, but this gets a little creepy.. this is, in my book, no different that chipping humans.. Search a house, search a car, search a business.. but tracking and locating electronically, yea.. sorry, I have a problem with that.

NOVA_GuyObamaCare Kills AmericansPremium join:2002-03-05 | My understanding is that the GPS chip can be remotely enabled-- even if your cell phone is turned off. I think there was discussion on this in yesterday's thread.
This was one of the many reasons I dumped my iPhone and went with a Palm Pre. The iPhone has a number of back doors that allow people/government/agencies to install software on the phone without your knowledge. I think there were even some posts here on DSLR that referenced a couple of apps that could this at one point. I don't like the thought of government agencies being able to install software that allows them to monitor my conversations, turn my phone on, use the microphone to record discussions in a room, see what web sites I've been surfing to, or anything else-- on my phone or off it.
I'm not stupid; I think that the Palm Pre (like all other phones) probably has back doors that allow this too. But at least with this device I have a removable battery (unlike the iPhone)... so if I want privacy, I get it. I only need remove the battery to put the phone into "paperweight mode". -- To all liberals: I am NOT one of your parents, so get the heck out of my wallet. It's time for you to grow up and take some personal responsibility for taking care of yourselves, which means not relying on the government to give it all to you.
