1 edit | HA ! BINGO ! just as I thought (and posted)
"public safety assistance requests" aka 911 calls.
that was probably 7.9 million of the requests

If that works for you - great. just don't try and sue some public safety entity when you call 911 on your cell and nobody responds... -- 3500/512 5.7 GHz Motorola Canopy Wireless; FoxValley.net 'It looks just like a Telefunken U47 !'
| | | Re: HA ! Umm, no, if you read the article, it clearly states LAW ENFORCEMENT uses it. That means the police used it 8 MILLION times to track someone. Assuming a generous 100 times per person, that's still 800,000 people being tracked by the government. Now, sprint is one of the smaller carriers, so multiply that by 6, and you will see the government is keeping tabs on almost 5 MILLION US CITIZENS, all without a warrant? You think it's so great? Lets see how you feel when you're wife's divorce attorney gets your GPS tracking history.
The problem with all of this, is it's being done OUTSIDE THE LAW. The 4th amendment CLEARLY states that the government needs to have PROBABLE CAUSE, and get a SIGNED WARRANT from a judge BEFORE they can do this. Well, that WAS the law until the facist BUSH raped it. In any case, the US government is tracking 5 million people, with no legal oversite! If this was 1940 Germany, maybe it's acceptable. But unfortunately for you, this ISN'T 1940 Germany, and in theory, will still have rights. -- The happiest countries are the most secular. Should be 1440 to 5760 per person per day depending on the function. If they are expected to be in a moving vehicle, then a minimum of 2880 per person per day (and more likely 5760). Now, don't forget this includes law enforcement tracking their own equipment, which Sprint offered last year for free on a test basis through this portal for agencies using sprint phones. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://bbs.iscabbs.com Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher
| | NOVA_GuyObamaCare Kills AmericansPremium join:2002-03-05 | Hey, let's be fair. Bush and Cheney asked for the laws to be changed, but it wouldn't have happened without the support of a number of prominent liberals who are still in Congress today. (There's a reason that the first three letters of "Congress" are "CON"...)
And if privacy was really a priority of folks like Obama and Pelosi, we'd have repealed the PATRIOT Act-- or at least trimmed it down-- by now. Instead the Obama Administration has moved to prevent records of telcos that were helping the government snoop from being revealed at every twist and turn. I guess the more things "change", the more they really stay the same.
All that being said, I'm not a supporter of the Bush Administration's actions by any stretch of imagination... but I want to point out that, contrary to what many of Obama's hard-core fans think, this mess isn't all "Bush's fault"... There are plenty of others who have their hands dirty too. They all should be held accountable for their actions and voted out of office, and replaced with folks who actually represent the will of you and me (you know, "the people")... Unfortunately this is not likely to happen. -- To all liberals: I am NOT one of your parents, so get the heck out of my wallet. It's time for you to grow up and take some personal responsibility for taking care of yourselves, which means not relying on the government to give it all to you.

Even if you turn off the location option on your phone it can still be tracked and will still send out on 911 calls. The options is only to prevent any apps on your phone from accessing the GPS.
If you are doing something somewhere where you are not supposed to be....turn the phone off. Or get a prepaid that isn't tied to your name. --
