Go Go Klobuchar

I hope she doesn't let up this time. Verizon now pro-rates a contract by $5.00/month which isn't fair. If there is one day left on your contract you would still owe them over 50 bucks to get out and I don't know what the deal is with $300 termination fees. I don't have much hope for this passing, but it is nice to know someone out there in Washington is aware of what is going on and how we are being ripped off. I suppose $300 might be enough to get the attention of even a Senator, so there might be some hope this comes to a vote.

Re: Go Go Klobuchar

With the new fee, its going down 10 dollars a month. What I am really angry about is the fact there is still an amount even at the end of the contract. That clearly shows its all about greed at Verizon Wireless. This Senator is right, the ETF should not be higher than the discount. The ETF should be 0 at the end of the contract. The purpose of the ETF was to recoup the discount over the contract term.....not to make extra money....its total BS and I completely support this Senator and her efforts.

I just double checked, the fee is actually 350 and there would still be 100 dollars at the end of the contract term.....that is a straight rip-off right there and its wrong.

Re: Go Go Klobuchar

They do this to prevent customer churn.

Personally , I like this bill , I don't think if the company has horrendous services we should have to pay the etf on more then the phone.

Why should I have to pay also the value of what money they would have made on me over the contract ?

That is completely unacceptable. This should pass easily if these senators are not in the pocket of the business.

Then again what is to stop the phone company from raising the "cost" of the phone to get their money anyway ?

They can raise the cost of the phone or even service to make up the difference, but they would be unlikely to do so. ETFs are anti-competitive and prevent someone from moving from one company to another, that otherwise might. When you make that easier for consumers, you increase competition. The odds are that this bill will lower rates and cell phone prices across the board.

Who cares if they do? It works elsewhere in the world to have subscribers pay the full purchase price of the phones. Then again, elsewhere in the world, you can buy any given cell phone from any seller and take that phone to any service provider. Personally, I'd rather pay for my own phone and be able to skip providers whenever I wanted to than to be locked in like now.

Notice "cost".

What I mean is they can raise the cost on paper when the phones cost them the same , nullifying the good this bill will do.

They can raise the price but not the cost. Granted, to the end-user, the effect is similar. The real way to nullify this is to include provisions for requiring acceptance of phones not sold by the service provider. Then, market forces go to work (after all, if VZW wants to charge $300 for the same phone I can get on eBay for $100, guess which phone I'm buying? Such would tend to keep them from arbitrarily raising prices on handsets).
