All our problems are solved.

Nice to know that solutions to all the serious problems in our country have already been found and implemented.

Now that there are absolutely no significant problems in the US for legislators to address, busybodies like Klobuchar are free to spend time addressing a mutually agreed upon, avoidable ETF.

Surely this means we have no debt, unemployment is low, fraud and corruption has been stamped out, and future generations have a utopian society to look forward to. Thanks, Amy!

Re: All our problems are solved.

Unfortunately, this is the kind of thinking that these businesses want you to have. They don't want people looking into this. Someone has to do it. Preferably now rather than later.

If you are worried about time being wasted, do you realize the kind of procedural BS reps do in Congress to stall, waste time and such with many bills? I rather have someone actually doing something that helps us rather than 'waste time' like they usually do.

Re: All our problems are solved.

Right.

But where is the competition? All I see with the carriers is almost an identical pricing structure on ETF, phones, plans, fees...
Sure, one may give rollover (like if Verizon did, they would rollover some other fee to recoup the lost revenue) minutes, where others do not.

This ETF bill is needed but the lobbyists will throw more piggy-cash at some yahoo from BFnowhere to change some text and they will stand up and applaud.

I just want a new phone with a keyboard (texting use mostly) and NOT be charged to cover the poor that don't have phone, the idiot driving and talking about her hair appt-running a stop sign, or fees for data plans (how coincidental all the carriers want minimum $30 data plans...)

I cannot wait till my plan is up to buy a phone and not lock in.

How is it that this "has" to be looked into? Even assuming someone needs a new smartphone, they can avoid paying the ETF by either not switching carriers for two years, or simply buying the phone at full retail without contract.

When they're selling a $600 phone for $200 in exchange for a 2 year commitment, it's only reasonable that there be an ETF if one party breaks that commitment.

Re: All our problems are solved.

It should be looked into because carriers have proven time and time again that they cannot be trusted. If the carriers have no plans to rip us off any further now or in the future, they shouldn't have any worries about this bill that is simply to keep them in check and give consumers peace of mind that the company will try and rip them off any further.

You do realize every one in government has strong points and weak points right ? It's not like every one works on the same damn thing.

This kind of thinking would stall the world in it's tracks.

The point is that there's really no need for the government to be involved in something like this, unless you believe that the federal government needs to regulate every detail of every transaction in commerce.

Re: All our problems are solved.

One could support this bill and still believe that the federal government does not need to be involved in every detail commerce related.

Great idea. Lets get rid of the reg.s altogether so I can start running my own 850MHz towers on anyone's property that will let me. I'll also set-up my own mesh wireless network in the neighborhood and offer my neighbors access for $15/month.

The gubmint got involved by licensing exclusive franchises to publicly owned resources. So there is no free market argument to be made after that.
