[BETA] Boxee Beta just around the corner

Boxee has been in alpha for over a year now (IIRC) and has just announced that they will be hosting a Beta Unveiling party in NY on Dec 7th (live streaming of the event also should be available).

You can also sign up to be listed for access to the new beta which will be limited/closed initially.

Numerous previews available at their blog.

I wanted some sort of net/movie device for one of my TVs a couple years ago. Apple TV looked cool but too tied to iTunes. Then I read about the Boxee hack. Bought one and did that and with local network access and Hulu it was almost perfect for what I wanted.
Then that whole controversy and no more Hulu on Boxee.
I've not used my ATV since.
ALL I want is a simple device with a decent interface that can play my local media collection and internet access.
[sigh]

Yeah the Hulu thing is a pain but the overall Boxee experience is still worthwhile in my opinion. I enjoy many of the other "apps" that integrate the multitude of online media into Boxee... And it's great for my locally stored media.

Screenshots of the upcoming beta:

[Edit: btw, they have totally redesigned the GUI -- I'm looking forward to getting a hold of a copy eventually ]

You can view the video of the Q&A here:

Closed beta is supposed to go about 4 weeks with priority given to those who attended the unveiling today. The closed beta is supposed to go for about four weeks and is then supposed to open up to the general public.

And last but not least, D-Link is the vendor of choice for the "Boxee Box" (ala Roku, etc).

Public beta for Boxee now avaliable: »boxee.tv/download

I've been using/testing/bug-reporting the last three (closed) beta release and it's really coming along. But, it's still BETA software

Some of the highlights include fully aggregating video sources (local and online, including Hulu, CBS, ABC, Fox, etc) for by TV show via the My TV Shows screen; a bookmarklet to remotely add items to your Boxee queue; and more.

Worth checking out for Boxee software, Boxee Box, and Boxee remote.

Lack of Hulu doesn't mean anything to me. I'm amazed it's such a big deal to people. Yeah, I played around with it when it came out, but I use the Boxee on my HTPC and its associated Apps far more than Hulu. And after stumbling with the first install, I've got the Beta up and running and really see an improvement over the previous Alpha.

I think that's what so amazing about Boxee -- it appeals to so many people for so many different reasons. Frankly, I watch 90% of all my TV (recorded or ripped from DVD) through Boxee. Love it for that.

I'm not nearly as a big a user of online content but it's great that it's there when I want it (that will change once 'my feeds' is working again and/or once youtube via Boxee let's me see my subscriptions properly )

If you haven't checked out Boxee lately or haven't kept up with the latest releases it might be time to do so again

»boxee.tv/download -- v0.9.21.114xx is probably the best-featured, most stable version since the last private beta release

Highlights include: manual search & resolve (for shows/movies that Boxee cannot automatically identify), live MLB.tv support, NHL GameCenter Live support, RSS feeds are back in full-swing, and more

This may not apply to everyone...but the minimum limit of Free Video Card Memory has been raised to 64MB for the new Beta so it will no longer run on some systems (it'll also warn on startup if your card has less than 128MB built-in memory ... but it will run in this case).

I just wish they would make these things just warnings rather than prevent it from running below 64MB... since my PC-in-the-corner has been running Boxee fine all along until this new Beta

Have you filed a jira bug report regarding this? (»jira.boxee.tv) As I responded to your post in the Boxee forums, it's still beta. This may not be a permanent issue; you should definitely contact them and let them know what you're seeing and your idea of having it be a warning instead of a fatal error.

(You could also use »support.boxee.tv to report this)

Good luck!

Per marcel's post in the Boxee forums: "this has been added to the bug list and will be fixed in the next version..."

Good news!
