Email seems to be working on my Motorola Droid (Verizon) now... settings I use are:

Incoming:
Username: myname@mchsi.com
POP3 server: mail.mediacombb.net
SSL (if available)
Port: 995

Outgoing:
SMTP server: mail.mediacombb.net
Security Type: SSL (always)
Port 465

Email seems to be going through fine for me the past 24 hours.

I am using Thunderbird fine. The trick is on the outgoing server do not!! check the box that is for security and authentication. Leave the username and password unchecked.

Well ... I wish I could report success like the others. I'm still having the same results as before with all combinations of the information provided so far. From the description, I'm guessing I must be running into the certificate issue but my phone (Nokia e71x) doesn't prompt to allow the outdated certificate. As long as I'm using the off net settings, I get a message that the login has failed. If I use the on net settings, it churns for a bit and then times out.
Please post any other ideas or when the certificate issues have been resolved. Thanks.
Have you deleted the account and then resetup the account and see if the phone auto-configures the settings for you?

Are you using mail.mchsi.com or mail.mediacombb.net as your inbound and outbound servers?

Did you get the warning about invalid security certificate and, if so, did you permanently accept it?

On the inbound server do you have SSL turned on and "use secure authentication" turned off?

Thanks for any Thunderbird info you can provide.

slatimer

@mchsi.com

I switched to mail.mediacombb.net for both inbound and outbound.

I can't remember if I got the warning or not, but if I did I think I just permanently selected it but I only think that came on when I had the box checked for security and authentication.

I am using the on network settings which doesn't need SSL

phantom99b ...

I have deleted the account (about 3 days ago) and there is no auto-config with this phone. All settings must be entered by the user for any POP3 type account that is not one of those provided by Nokia and mediacom is not one of them.
When going through the setup, the last step it will connect, exchange certificates and when it works, then it will save the config info. I can retry but as soon as I cancel out to try later, the config info doesn't save and so I start over the next time.
I think the lack of config screens is more due to the AT&T Xpress Mail app that's on the phone. I've seen a number of complaints about it from others, it's just that I wanted to avoid having to find a replacement mail app if at all possible.

Ok here is what you do.
Open thunderbird then go to tools and account settings.
Click on account actions and choose to remove account.
close and reopen thunderbird.
Then go to tools and account settings.
Then click on Account actions and choose to add mail account.
Enter your name, email address and password, then click on continue.
You may get a cert warning just click on add exception.
This is going to search and find incorrect information.
Click on edit and then change the drop down from an imap to pop under incoming mail.
change the Outgoing to mail.mediacombb.net, change the port to 465 and choose ssl/tls
Click on re-test settings, then click on Create Account.
You will now be in the account settings.
Click on outgoing Server(SMTP) the click on edit.
all you should have to do is add the @mediacombb.net to the username
click on ok then ok again.

You have just setup the account.

key notes
smtp.mediacombb.net fails it should be mail.mediacombb.net for the outbound email server.

Doing a google search for the software that phone uses it sounds like the issue could be on the computer you are using to setup the access. I went to ATT's site and it has you install something on the computer to push the emails to the phone. »www.wireless.att.com/businesscen···mail.jsp

I am not sure what needs to be changed to get the software to work. What does AT&T say?
From what I have read it sounds like all you need is the off network settings to get this working.

Based on Slatimer's information and some testing you need to go into your account settings and:
1) In Server Settings change the Server Name to mail.mediacombb.net (note that you have it spelled wrong in your posting - is the same mistake in your settings?), Connection Security to "None" and leave "Use secure authentication" unchecked.
2) In Outgoing Server, edit the Mediacom definition and make sure the server name is mail.mediacombb.net, the port is 25, and everything under Security and Authentication is turned off.
3) Click OK until the Account Settings window is closed and you should now be able to send and receive mail.

These instructions assume you are using a Mediacom internet connection to retrieve your mail and that you are using Thunderbird 3. Thunderbird 2 has a similar setup but some of the terms are slightly different.

EDIT: I see I just sort-of duplicated phantom99b's post. Those instructions are much more thorough. Sorry!

With regards to the phone's e-mail app, "AT&T Xpress Mail", there is no software on a computer, all config settings are done right on the phone. On that page you referenced, the software was for business mail getting pushed out to the phone. For access to personal POP3 email it's all configured on the phone.
When I went through similar issues the first time (when I first got the phone), AT&T support said it was my ISP. That's when I found that the outbound SMTP server needed to be setup as cwmx.com ... which worked just fine up until Dec. 10th when mediacom decided to change things. Then sometime on the 14th I was able to get it to work with the new server settings as long as the POP3 server was not using SSL and the SMTP server was. Then that stopped working late in the day on the 16th and every combination I've tried since either give me a login error or a network timeout error.

The only changes I made to Thunderbird was the mail.mediacombb.com server name. Otherwise, it's presently working with the old settings, as is my Mac mail.
I can only hope it stays up!

Thanks Jason, and everybody else on this forum.

I'm keeping this page open and bookmarked to monitor progress.

I've used Hotmail more in the past 2 weeks more than I have in the 12 years that I've had that address!

Anyone know what this is ... my email has worked fine for the last several days and just now, when I tried to send, I got an 'A network service error has occurred'. What's that mean??

Sounds like the mail server was not available again. However, I just logged into webmail without trouble. Try it again.

I sent an e-mail to four friends that use Mediacom e-mail on Sunday at 9:41 PM CST using the webmail system. I also CCed myself and two non-Mediacom accounts. The e-mail was successfully and immediately delivered to the non-Mediacom accounts but never showed up in the Mediacom accounts (including the CC to myself). I received a few delayed delivery notices and then Monday night I received a notice that delivery was aborted. This agrees with earlier reports by others that there was a problem sending mail between Mediacom accounts.

However, similar e-mails sent on Monday were delivered immediately.

Hopefully this means the server maintenance done Sunday night corrected the problem. Only time will tell. Nevertheless, everyone should be aware of potential problems in this area.

Here is the final notice of aborted delivery:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients was aborted after 24.0 hour(s):
