It will work on alot of networks

"According to the FCC website, the Nexus One is made in Taiwan and supports quad-band GSM/Edge and UMTS/HSDPA networks, as well as tri-band 850/1700/1900 networks."

I hope that definitely means 850/1700/1900 UMTS. If that's in fact true, then we're golden.

I think he's asking if the one sold directly by Google will be unlocked.

I agree. I would definitely check into it. I'm on AT&T and I hate my current phone. It will be interesting to see what Google offers and for how much.

Ugh, I just read that it will be made by HTC. I hate my HTC Fuze. It's incredible slow and clunky. This phone got good reviews and I have no idea why. It literally takes 2-3 seconds for the phone to recognize that you have pressed the button to answer a call. Not acceptable at all.

According to the FCC filing docs, today, the phone will have quad band GSM and tri-band UMTS (900/1700/2100), no AT&T 3G bands.

Apparently Google knows how slow it is and doesn't want to burden it's buyers with a slow 3G AT&T experience.

T-Mobile's robust 3G network should be able to handle this, along with it's other smartphones perfectly.

It runs Windows Mobile, and doesn't have a Snapdragon processor. The Nexus One has neither of these problems.

Hmm, but if it doesn't have 850/1900 3G then it won't work for the handful of smaller GSM carriers in the US that

A) Can/will deploy 3G on 850/1900
B) Don't have 1700 spectrum

It won't work for 3G. It'll still work for GPRS and EDGE with the quad-band GSM support.

Yes, they will have to have 1700 spectrum, at least for the US. This phone is 3G capable in Europe as well (due to it's 900 3G radio).

Correction: it'll be 3G capable in Europe due to its 2100 radio. There are an increasing number of 900-band 3G services but most are on 2100.

Also, do you think Google would want their phone users using EDGE all the time? I'd think not, unless the EDGE network is upgraded to the max like AT&T did in some places when the original iPhone came out. Have you used EDGE lately? It sucks rather mightily.

I don't have AT&T, so I can't tell you.

I use T-Mobile's robust 3G network. It works everywhere I go.

I'll be getting (on loan) a T-Mobile 3G aircard soon, so I'll be able to see how robust T-Mo's network is in my area.

One thing I can say up front though is they don't cover my hometown in central TX yet. AT&T got there a few months ago. Verizon started service there on 3G a few years ago. Sprint started maybe 3.5 years ago with EvDO. Of the three AT&T is the fastest and might have the best 3G coverage right around town (yay 850MHz) but Sprint to my knowledge has a better overall experience.

T-Mobile maxes out the tech they have deployed in the area. Unfortunately it's 40 kbps GPRS last I checked.

Why do you keep using the word "robust" to describe T-Mobile's 3G network? Its crappier then AT&T's...
T-Mobile has less 3G coverage in Colorado than AT&T, and they use the 1700MHz band for their 3G, while AT&T is converting their 3G over to the 850MHz band. The lower the frequency the better it will penetrate items that may block higher frequencies. With that being said though, VZW has much better 3G coverage than any other cell provider, but they use the CDMA technology, and have a poor selection of smart phones. With T-Mobile using 1700MHz for their 3G that limits the number of phones that they can use on it due to no one else uses that band. AT&T's 3G though is usually a frequency built into most international phones so I can get one from almost anywhere and it works just fine. T-Mobile's 3G network is not "robust".

Will I ever go to Colorado? Probably never. So do I care about coverage there? Probably not.

T-Mobile's 3G works everywhere I go.

That would suck. It needs to include UMTS2100 support no matter what. I don't need the phone to support more than one North American 3G network, but it needs to be able to work on 99% of the world's 3G networks.

I wonder why no vendor has come up with a quad-band 3G phone yet.

850/900/1700/1900/2100

It would have to be a penta-band 3G radio.

Combine that with the quad-band GSM, WiFi, BT, and GPS and you'll have a 12-band phone!

See Engadget's debrief of the FCC filings:

I hardly see how Windows Mobile is a "problem." I have an HTC S743 and it runs just fine. I would have bought an Andriod phone but there are none with AT&T 3G. (UMTS 850/1900.)
