| Re: No QWERTY keypad?? Theoretically yes. Maybe a little harder than with a physical keyboard but it's still possible. It's not like the letters are moving all over the place.
Besides, why would you ever do that sort of thing? If you're looking at the screen then you're looking at the keyboard.

Maybe some people want to discretely use a phone, such as type out a text message with the phone in their pocket peaking at the screen only 2-3 times before confirming the send action.

I'm betting that the majority of people would appreciate the thinner form factor. Look at the iPhone; secret texters haven't taken a huge chunk out of its market.

| | | said by MovieLover76:As someone who used to have a phone with a physical qwerty keyboard and now uses an Iphone, I have to say that the virtual querty keyboard on the iPhone is as good as if not better than (due to better spell checking) my old querty keyboard. I can type out emails on my Blackberry Pearl significantly faster and more accurate than I can on any QWERTY keyboard, and that's because SureType allows me to minimize the amount of separate keys I have to dance across to write my message.
In any case the European model only can work if the prices are fair. $600 for a device where one with identical technology was sold for the exact same price 8 years ago, doesn't fly. Electronics are ALWAYS going down in price because the components get cheaper to make; look at LCD and plasma, compared to 10 years ago. Yet cell phone prices remain high and the manufacturers want massive profits. Basically, most devices are worth no more than half of what their MSRP is, especially the iPhone. You're not going to convince me that a little Samsung flip is worth $300.

| I agree. The physical keyboard is one of the main draws. And for those of us who like to mod our devices, I hear it's kind of a pain in the ass to initiate some of the keystrokes required to flash the device when you don't have the physical keyboard. I almost never use the virtual keyboard. -- Don't worry, scrote. There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick-ass lives. | |

| Re: No QWERTY keypad?? Jail breaking/modding the G1 is pretty simple and straight forward. The hardest part is finding all the files and the step-by-step procedures and even that's not really that difficult. As long as you are flashing the phone to known, stable ROM's, stability isn't typically an issue, although there's always that chance something goes wrong. I do understand your point-of-view though. I'd hate to brick a phone that I really, really rely upon. -- Don't worry, scrote. There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick-ass lives. | |

phones with physical QWERTY are lame in my opinion, they're harder to clean

On my Nokia E70, I dont even have to look at the keypad. To pay more on a phone than a laptop and not get a physical keypad is insane. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. However, I strongly disagree with your assertion that manufacturers release devices without keyboards as a cost cutting measure. No keyboard means less components to wear out and break down, leading to an overall more robust phone. Losing the added bulk of a keyboard also allows the manufacturer to release a thinner, more pocketable phone or keep the bulk and include a larger battery enabling longer time between charges. Virtual keyboards can also be more convenient. Case in point, on the Pre, you have to slide open the fragile keyboard each and every time you want to enter something into a field on a webpage or app, which can get tedious.
Obviously this all boils down to personal preference, which is of course highly subjective. Don't give virtual keyboards a bad rap though just because you've never encountered a well implemented one or lack the hand-eye coordination to use one effectively.

Second, paying anywhere near the price of a laptop for a phone is insane.

1 edit | said by r81984:This phone is worthless without a QWERTY keypad. ... The palm pre has a QWERTY keypad. Palm gets it. There was a time when I'd readily agree with you; I went from an HTC PPC-6700 to an HTC PPC-6800 to a Palm Pre to an LG Lotus to the HTC Touch Pro2 to another Palm Pre to the HTC Hero. All the phones prior to the Hero had physical keyboards. Wanna know which phone I've enjoyed the most? The Hero, hands down. I can easily type as fast on it as I did with any previous phone thanks to its excellent design. Since owning the Hero I've come to realize that a physical keyboard adds unnecessary bulk and in the case of the Pre, just another point of hardware failure (the sliding mechanism on the Pre is extremely poorly designed).
I'll take a thinner phone with a well designed virtual keyboard over a thicker keyboard phone any day.

Regarding physical vs virtual, I've found the virtual on the TP2 to be pretty easy to use, though I still prefer the physical most of the time.

I personally would be much happier if it had a Dvorak-layout keypad. The key being I would want it to have a full keyboard and not a limited software keypad or numpad.
