No CDMA = Deal breaker

If they want this to be a truly "open" phone then they'll have radio support for CDMA in addition to the GSM bands. I believe the added cost would be negligible since CDMA doesn't come in as many flavors as GSM, and it would enable you to use ALL US carriers instead of just T-Mo or AT&T (provided carriers don't refuse to allow the phone on their network).

I'm a very happy Sprint customer and I will most likely purchase this phone unless they decide to release it as GSM only. If that ends up being the case I'll just stick with my Hero until something faster comes along which has a CDMA radio.

CDMA (1x, EVDO) is old technology.

...which accounts for what, half or 2/3 of the US cellular landscape right now? There's no denying that LTE is the way of the future but if you're trying to get this phone into the hands of everyone, why would you limit it to only two carriers?

There's no denying that LTE....., why would you want to add an entire radio for 2 carriers, predominately in the US. You've got to think of the entire world.

Re: No CDMA = Deal breaker

Google's goal is to get this phone into as many customer hands as possible, right? United States, worldwide, whatever. Your argument is that the best way to achieve their goal... is to eliminate radio support for a still viable standard which serves roughly 150 million cellular customers in the United States?

I know 150 million-ish CDMA users is dwarfed by the billion-ish GSM users in the rest of the world but I guess I'm just trying to understand why you're arguing against including support for hald of the current US cellular market when doing so would come at what I perceive to be a negligible cost.

Yup.

Figure this, China Mobile has more GSM subscribers (300 mil+) than the entire population of the United States, and you can see why Google dropped CDMA support in this new phone.

Google doesn't care. They're releasing a world phone that happens to work on T-Mobile's 3G network and ATT's 2G network. The US is just one piece of the pie.

THe HTC Passion appears to be coming out for Verizon. Similar phone, but with CDMA. I'll bet Sprint will get that phone as well. May not be Google-branded but to my knowledge it's Android and it's the same guts.
