Re: Leave anti-virus running when playing online games?if the game was the reason for you being there, then yes.
How many people give out passwords and other info in a game that they'd never do otherwise? |

I think what caffinator is going after is the part that I said about downloading content (maps, etc) for the game. The big exception is his/her example, the data transfer is happening via IM rather than via the game itself. |

Yeah, and i'm not talking about soley FPS's either, i'm taking turn-based or RTS where you have the time to mess up. The game isn't the problem, it's just the common denominator. |

Well I'm only talking about a situation where the virus comes from the game server itself, or is transmitted from one player on the server to another player on the server through the server.
Not downloading files in the background. |

ok...that's less likely, but there are many compromised servers out there as well. |

I take it back that it can't happen then.
However simply disabling things such as sprays and automatic downloading would render those methods ineffectual.
For games without those things altogether(such as all MMOs) it wouldn't be possible to be infected unless the game company itself was infected. |

If you're that worried, there's always the choice of running your application within a virtualized environment, like Altiris' SVS.
Taking the original question into consideration however, you're bound to run into some problems with SVS and a game you happen to play. It happens. With that in mind, I think you'll have less problems running your AV running as intended.
And for the record, passwords / accounts are passed around like duck sauce packets in MMORPGs (Final Fantasy XI is my preference). Clan needs your characters special abilities because rare monster blah blah is about to spawn and you're going to sleep. Friend you've known for years in-game but never in real life starts begging for your account info. You do trust him, just not to that extent. You're under pressure now though, from him and the rest of your clan. A choice has to be made. Years of work & building alliances/friendships are on the line.
That's an extreme situation. Most of the time people give the info up to online friends without much thought, and some of these characters are decked to the hilt. I suppose this is one of many reasons I never dedicated myself to the end-game scene. |

I play Garrys Mod and this is true. But the instances i've heard and encountered only infected the LUA files in gmod. » www.facepunch.com/showth ··· t=602151There have been cases where a LUA virus made has jumped out of the game files I 've read about in the past buti've yet to experience any. But from the reports I've read in the past, i'd consider it to be possible. Oh yeah, and this was downloading in game files, from server. Google search : garrys mod lua virus if interested. |

I have heard when playing games. It is best to close every thing and disable anti-virus for issues do not occur. Maybe, maybe not, but if you forget to turn it all back on... I don't disable my AV or my firewall. |

You get infected by purposely doing something stupid, not by playing games or running Steam. |

Being a long time PC gamer, I have seen AV programs bring games to their knees. I have had instances where I forgot to disable AVG and had some issues with performance. Ever since then, I just disable it before I play. Its easier that way. |

I wanted to mention that I used to do this when I had a sub par computer a few years ago. Due to limited resources(CPU, Memory) and the fact that that the AV I used to use didn't have any gaming mode.
But since I've upgraded my system and know I got power to spare I leave it on and haven't given it a second thought doing so.
I use Avast, never been any issue of slowdowns while I'm in game since upgrading to a decent system. |
