He took the wuss's way out.

He should have either

a) Made clear that he has changed his mind. He should've stated he is not ready to face the consequences of what he threw together.

b) Went through with it and supported his initial decision.

But to state that he was never serious about it all along is the wuss's way out. This is backpedaling at its worst.
