In my case, what would have been a Pacific Bell center prior to 1996. PacBell was a bit haughty because they knew I did not have the wire maintenance plan. The later calls (last four years, or so) would have been SBC (until around February, 2006, when the logo on the bills changed to "AT&T") were more courteous. I only called DSL support once, but they (SBC) were pretty good, too.
And the new "AT&T" is just the old "SBC" in new livery.
