$360 ETF Fun

I can't wait to see the Comcast commercials that use the $360 fee as ammunition. I suspect it will hurt too. I have a year and a third left of guaranteed prices and wouldn't dream of switching back to Comcast until that lapses, but if Comcast increases their HD offerings and improves their DVR by that time and doesn't institute the ridiculous ETF, I will switch to them just to spite Verizon. My cellular contract is up this summer and while I may continue with Verizon (it is no longer certain now), I will not continue with the prospect of a huge ETF hanging over me.

Congress needs to move on these fees immediately. These ETFs destroy a competitive environment. Let Verizon charge them up front as a hook up fee and see how far that gets them. They wouldn't get away with it and they wouldn't even try to do it.

Fee for canceling, that's hilarious. Okay Fios i will never leave Comcast if that is part of the plan.

Well, that's the phone company for you.. the largest pushers of ETF fees... At least with Cable companies, you have the option of a contract or not.. I'm sure you do with Verizon, don't you? ... and you just pay the install fees?

To be honest, I never find the deals that tie you to a contract a "good deal" anyway... it's cheaper, in the long run, to often simply pay the install which is less than an ETF.

These companies know that people don't have a lot of liquid cash laying around so the ETF is appealing on the front end for a no or low start up cost.. yet people fall for this and when the ETF hits them when they cancel, they cry like babies.

Not that the rate will matter, Verizon will change some term in the T&C and give you a right to cancel w/o fee, just like with cell phone contracts.

How do you go through and compare/contrast every minute detail of your decision between Comcast and Verizon, and then say that ETFs destroy a competitive environment. You've shown that they do exactly the opposite -- Verizon has an ETF, Comcast doesn't. THAT is competition at its finest -- you get to pick which one you like better after factoring in the features, speed, cost, and ETF.

Re: $360 ETF Fun

The answer is so ridiculously simple, I feel silly stating it. If the customer can freely move from company to company, competition is enhanced. If a customer is locked into using a particular company by ever increasing punitive fines that are stated in fine print, I think most reasonable people would call that anti-competitive.

Re: $360 ETF Fun

They aren't ever increasing fines, they're ever decreasing cancellation penalties. And who said anything about fine print? If they're clearly disclosed then so be it.

It sounds like you want to cherry-pick -- have access to the new customer deals and hop from one provider to the next every 3 months for the best deal/promo. That's why providers have to have cancellation penalties; the special deals are in exchange for you keeping the service for a minimum period of time.

Re: $360 ETF Fun

This is almost pointless to argue. Verizon cell phone ETFs just went from $175 to $350 on many of their phones. Now they are increasing the cost of an early termination (even if you move) of FIOS to $360.00. Next year maybe they will want $720.

I am a perfectly happy FIOS customer. I don't have any plans to switch for at least 16 months.

Re: $360 ETF Fun

If you don't like high cell phone ETF, get an iPhone (still $175 ETF) or Tmobile (no ETF at all.) If you don't like Fios ETF, get Comcast or TWC or whoever else is available.

You get to pick: iPhone (sexy, awful network, lower ETF) or Verizon (clunkier devices, better network, high ETF) or Tmobile (small network, no ETF.) You get to pick: Fios (OMG fiber rulez!!) or Comcast (no ETF.)

Lots of choices. Competition works. What's anticompetitive here?

Apparently a good number of people or they wouldn't be bothering with the high ETF.
