One more thing

One last thought...

If Apple decides to tell AT&T to get lost and releases the 4th gen handset in June 2010 with no AT&T 3G support and exclusively for either TMo or VZM, do you think Google is going to sell as many Android handsets on that carrier?

The answer is no. Plenty of people are already flocking to AT&T from VZM or TMo solely for an iPhone. Anyone buying an Android handset is buying one because they either:

a) Want an iPhone but are unwilling to switch carriers, so they're settling for the next best alternative, which is, in their eyes, an Android smartphone.

b) Really likes the Android platform for one reason or another and wants one instead of an iPhone.

If VZM or TMo get an iPhone, everyone who would fall under category "a" is going to react with "HOLY SHIT CARRIER X HAS THE IPHONE NOW OMG OMG OMG". They're gonna buy the iPhone. They're not gonna settle for an Android when they know the can get an iPhone, which isn't going to help Android sales (obviously in case "a" and not case "b").

/End rant.

Actually, I bought my Hero because of both Android and it's on Sprint's network. Sprint is good where I am. I didn't want an iPhone for many reasons. But I guess relegating it down to A or B is a valid argument.

There are more people on this planet that use Google products than Apple products. More and more everyday are getting indoctrinated into the Android platform. I think Android is going to be just fine.

You also need to take price into consideration. A BIG consideration these days. Maybe make that your C argument

Not sure that's true. I have both an Android handset and an iPhone. Both devices do different things well. The iPhone is a fantastic multimedia device and a pretty good portable gaming device. Android is a better raw communication platform due to supporting multi-tasking, more customization options, more carrier choice, and probably most importantly more choices in physical form factor. Some people just really want a physical keyboard. Anyway I guess the point is the mobile market is gigantic. There's plenty of room for both Apple & Google (and others) to co-exist. The aging clunky BlackBerry platform is still hugely successful simply because it's probably the best overall communications platform and that's what lots of people are looking for.
