Wireshark showing TCP Retransmissions
Same's been happening here for about two weeks or more. Having issues more over wireless than on wired connections from my router, running Tomato.

I've been doing Wireshark analysis on the issues, and it seems to be that there are packets being dropped at some point during the connection. The outages seem to last for anywhere from a few seconds to ten minutes long, after which the problem disappears and the site is working again. It seems to be rolling through, certain sites will work, while certain others won't.

It almost seems to be that something is waiting to time out and then after it does, the routing begins working properly again. I'm seeing the same issue where a connection is opened, HTTP GET is sent, and then there is no response. Attached is an image of a Wireshark log showing what the computer was doing over the course of 20 minutes while it said "Waiting for www.google.com". There are just TCP retransmits, trying to get the source site to respond, but not getting anything back. After a long period of time, the browser will usually just give up and drop it.

I've gone through the usual stuff, resetting the modem, upgrading the router software, and testing on wired/wireless networks, but I haven't seen any change in behavior. It helps to know that I'm not the only one too; I was at my grandparents' down in Lakeland the other day and noticed that they were having the same issue.. so it's fairly widespread. Perhaps it is an upstream problem like they're saying...

Internet is also slow here on PAFB, while out to lunch there were some 14 BHN and 5 Level 3 trucks heading north bound towards the base. i wonder what's going on there.

That's very interesting. Most of the packet loss I see starts on the atl tbone hop. Not to mention almost all of the CFL traffic goes out on the tbone and not there level 3 peer. But its also possible that the tbone's transport is provided on level 3 fiber, and is just a private line to somewhere else.

It is interesting that WFTV seems to be the only news site mentioning the problems. Is the Orlando Sentinel, WESH, and WKMG too afraid of offending a big advertiser? And we know we won't hear about this on CFNews13, eh?

I work in the industry, so I can understand outages, it happens, sometimes it's unavoidable -- I get that. My frustration comes from how badly BrightHouse handles the customer service side of their business. Their so-called "Tier 1" is obviously trained only to diagnose router/computer issues and never even considers the fact that the upstream network could be a factor. How many hours passed before someone at BrightHouse even realized this was an issue effecting tens of thousands of users throughout Florida and beyond? Furthermore, there has been no public word from BrightHouse about this issue and even the 'network status' page on help.rr.com has not been updated. I mean.. just who the hell does BrightHouse think they are?

I agree, I also work in the industry (network sys op for Brevard Wireless). When we have a problem and someone calls, we say yup, we know, were working on it. Chances are I know about it before the customer does, and the calls start rolling in. The fact that it takes so much to get BHN to accept that something is wrong with there perfect network is down right disgusting.

Has anyone tried by IP address to get to these sites?

Its not DNS, its a packet loss issue. Everything resolves but it can't get there.

A. Do you get that many of the sites people are having a problem with use DoubleClick, Google, and Twitter links embedded in their pages thus causing it not to load at all/slowly? Thus using the IP as work around wouldn't solve the average user's problems.

B. It's not a friggin DNS issue.

Good post. I see the same things here. I'm fortunate (or unfortunate depends on how you look at it) to also have root access on a server that can't be reached. Same thing happens on the server end as well. Responds back to the initial request but never gets there and it keeps trying. Whatever it is its on brighthouses end. Even if it is their upstream provider.

Good to know you're seeing the same thing.. knowing this, it's definitely the pipes in between. Hafta see how BH handles all this stuff; I'd assume their techs know this info already, but talking to one directly is pretty much impossible.

My biggest issue is that its 4 days in and no resolution. No problem, even a fiber cut, should take that long. Funny thing is one server I run has 10 ips on it. Some work and some don't. They are all on the same subnet too.

I see the same thing. Same goes for my ip space, I have 5 statics, and some IPs get me where I need to go, others don't.

Same problem with trouble connecting to google.com & microsoft.com. However, if I search through another service such as dogpile.com it seems to at least provide a search but then anything under one of those doesn't work.

I would like to hope that Brighthouse Networks has some class and would admit to their being a 2-3 day problem but apparently they are just as bad as Comcast. Another du-opoloy....

Well they admit a problem when you call. But They need to publicly make a statement about it.

I have found that they do not admit a problem when you call, but consistently try to blame it on your personal experience. Only after becoming irate with them and asking to speak to a supervisor is the problem admitted. Beyond that they are tight-lipped and offer no explanation. Some of their so-called consumer care professionals are not even aware that there is a problem, and these are those who are in the Central Florida area. It would be nice if they were all on the same page, and were able to offer some assistance rather than berate the customer. They closed the ticket on Earthlink saying that the issue has been resolved, but now they are aware that there are still problems with roadrunner. Has anyone who has Earthlink had their problem solved? I have roadrunner and there are still problems.

I been having this problem in Flagler as well, it's been at least 4 days now. Calls to the call center result in the typical end user run through, restart your computer, restart your modem etc.. etc..

I mentioned the at the time 6 pages deep thread here and the news article and was told "Sir it's not everyone in central Florida, just a few", seems like more then a few people to me.

Also as other have stated this is not a DNS issue , I have changed my DNS servers to other public DNS servers to no avail.

I doubt earthlink is fixed. It uses the same equipment. And I guess I get a little further since I call the biz tech support, Since its a biz modem. Within 3 minutes they tell me the problem is still going on and to wait. I'm still showing problems here in Merritt Island. 2:21 PM
I first called on Christmas eve :s

A call to biz tech support just now says that its not fixed yet, and that there is no ETA. Apparently 2 Of the head engineers are on a "conference call" with the "backbone tech's". Guy tried to say its bigger then bright house, that google was having problems. I was quick to point out that it works fine from work or another provider and its most defiantly bright houses problem.

It would be breaking news on CNN if Google was having this level of problems for 4 days straight.

I can also confirm my 3G AT&T works fine and when I proxy via a server in Texas, my BrightHouse connection is fine.

Wow, I'm showing a good path to my servers at work now. Maybe its fixed?
