 | is qwest all talk, or all true? well, i have repeatedly got the run-around from qwest as to whether or not i can run a modem other than the intel ones they supply or the cisco 678 that i hear is a headache to set up. I have found a westell that i like that is both PPPoA compatable and G.DMT compatable. i have a D-Link router that i have heard you are able to make work with PPPoA logon. anyone know if it is just qwest giving me the runaroud or will other dsl modems work with their service? if so, do you think my westell modem will work? |

 | Welcome Chris, I am next door to ya and also had a pain hooking up the Cisco 678 using their bogus stuff. Luckily for me, I selected Blarg as my ISP since they support my networking. They 5 star techs there had me up and running ASAP without all the "help" that accompanied the Cisco 678. I was using a D-Link 704 prior to my Qwest service. I was encouraged to try the Cisco unit by the Blarg techs and so far it has done everything I need done. Feel free to email me and maybe we can chat... |
|
 | reply to chrismg wow, that is real coincidence
i chose blarg as well, and i dont know if i mentioned it but i am running a dlink 704 as well
the thing is i dont want to pay 130 dollars for a poc thing like a cisco 678. so my question still stands, will the westell modem work with my line?
P.S. have you noticed the 5-10 kbps slowdown on your line? |

 | Chris: Qwest uses DMT 1.413. They do not use Glite. Hopes this helps, Dean |
|
 | reply to chrismg I have heard of sevreal people using non suported DSL modems on Qwest's network. The only thing you have to find is one that supports DMT. The D-Link 704 looks like router/firewall not a DSL modem(gah don't start with the fact they aren't modems... anyways...) If I recall some people had gotten the SpeedStream Series( »www.efficient.com/products/modeth.html ) of DSL modems to work correctly on Qwest. You should ask in the Qwest Forum For details, the posts about it where about 5 months ago if I recall correctly. Just look on Ebay ( »search.ebay.com/search/search.dl···sl+modem ) Searching for DSL modem, and just check the specs on each, anything that supports the DMT standard **should** work, but Qwest won't help if it breaks. -- "Is your father a Millionare or a senate member?""No, Sir""Then you're up shit creek, Popinjay, without a Paddle" -- Catch 22 |

 | There's actually Cisco guy that hangs in msn broadband (mholtum) who has it all spread out as to how to change the 675 to work for Qwest or MSN. |
|
 | reply to chrismg err.. the 675 will not work most of the time(on new installs) because it uses CAP only, while the 678 can do CAP and DMT. Qwest no longer installs anyone with CAP and is moving remaning CAP customers to DMT when they can. But using a 678 on MSN should present no problems If I recall the bigggest thing needed for MSN was to set the username password to somthing weird so it would auth correctly. -- "Is your father a Millionare or a senate member?""No, Sir""Then you're up shit creek, Popinjay, without a Paddle" -- Catch 22 |
