Re: A shoot and a miss Are you saying that you think it costs more to make a phone than a whole computer? |

Are you saying that price is relevant to size? Often times, and in many cases, smaller "anything" is usually more expensive as more has to go into making them. While it's not always the case, it generally holds true when electronics tend to get smaller.
I think people are, quite frankly, spoiled when it comes to the subsidized phone scheme. People tend to look at the cheapest listed price as the "norm" and forget that there are things attached to these lower prices.. they're more than happy to get the cheaper price, but, down the road is out of sight, out of mind... how soon we forget.
So, in my opinion, yes, in some cases, it does cost more to make a phone than some of the "whole computers" you are referring to. |

Standard desktop $900 lets say a normal laptop about $850 a netbook $350 Small netbook based desktop $200
ya the trend sure seems to be holding sure sometimes a luxury one might cost alot more (there are some $2000 netbooks) but those tend to be over priced and aimed at certaint people
for the most part they make it smaller to save them selfs money since it costs them less to make
for the price of that N1 you could get a Netbook with built in 3G and use skype with a bluetooth headset and then put the netbook in a backpack or carrying case you could even load linux on it |

A standard desktop is about $600 (you did say "standard) A normal laptop is on average of about $450-600 A netbook, sure, average price is about $300-400
...and I"m really not sure what a small netbook based "desktop" is.. a netbook isn't a desktop.
And honestly, I've never seen a netbook costing $2,000 ... got a link to one?
Also, we're here again with the way out of the norm set up to make phone calls. While you're right, someone can get a netbook, 3G coverage, skype, bluetooth, yada yada.. no one is going to do that as a cell phone, its simply no comparison. YES, it COULD be done, but when talking in comparison, its just not a valid one.
I'm not sure why you brought up Linux other than maybe reference, however, again, it's not a mainstream O/S, and if it's for cost comparison, in a netbook, XP isn't really a cost factor.. the makers pay generally about $5 to $10 for the O/S in bulk for the OEM license. |

The N1 has turn-by-turn GPS, 3g, bluetooth, and it fits in your pocket. Do you seriously think that people want to lug around a backpack everywhere they go? If you do, how bout you set up a shop that only sells 3g netbooks with bluetooth, and see how many customers you get. -- "What makes us omniscient?
