| Worldwide Cellular coverage Ok , so I am back to my normal holidays travelling South America to see family.
I have now been through Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and Peru. And I have noticed through all my travels. I have had near perfect 3g gsm coverage. I mean these are not well traveled roads. Maybe 3 trucks a day.
My families homes in Colombia all have full bars and 3g on a motorola l7. These are not big cities and are usually homes spread out among the mountain sides.
Yet cable tv and internet, and great 3g coverage. I can't wrap my head around why this is , I can't take a 3g at&t phone more then 10 feet behind my home and lose coverage !
My Verizon droid however is roaming and only has data coverage via wifi but can still receive calls with good coverage.
Am I missing something or are these countries cellular infrastructure just that much better? Even in the larger cities here , the wireless is so cheap data and equipment wise it's scary. So why do we pay a ton ?

Just amazed at the leaps and bounds of this country in the past 10 years. Of course I type this in 68 degree weather with near no humidity looking at the mountains of Medellin Yeah I had to rub that in for the folks in the northeast -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |

| Well, in most countries, the government backed the building of the cell networks so it was done with at least some forethought and not to build as least as possible (AT&T) to satisfy shareholders. -- My Blog 2.0 |

Also the government of the us has this slush fund USF ? And that has been being drawn from by all the cellular providers and I have been putting into it as well. I want something for my costs.
These guys have coverage everywhere , even the peaks of some of the mountains have signal. And they buried fiber runs to get there as well as with power.
One has to wonder , do at&t , verizon or any others share holders see these holes in service ? Do they care that they can't make a call while driving through a valley ? -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |

 | reply to BosstonesOwn I had the exact same experience in Vietnam.
We went everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE! I even had perfect cell signal ON THE OCEAN! As well as perfect cell signal in the mountains. And in the most recent trip to VN, even had perfect signal underground in one of the fox holes the Vietnamese Army used against the US in the VN War.

The reception in any particular area is all about the cell traffic and the environment. Minimal users in relatively flat terrain mean a higher transmitter power can be used. Once you start getting into urban and mountainous environments, the power needs to be lowered to minimize interference, and when more cells are used to deal with more users, the power in any given cell also needs to be lowered.
Either that or there is some kind of conspiracy to make a lot of money installing state-of-the-art communications infrastructures everywhere else but here... |

| reply to Red_Menace Here in lay the issue , I worked in telco cell sector for years , I know the rf and specs for most gear in use through out the world.
This area is very mountainous. I am starting to realize it is just corporate greed in the us.
a single minute here right now is 17 Colombian peso's or unlimited voice data messaging and anything your phone supports for $23 usd a month.
While I understand 2000 pesos is close to $1 usd that puts minutes at a significant less cost. Thier equipment isn't old. I got in touch with a friend at TIGO and Comcel and went and took a walk through the data centers I worked in previously. (It was cool to see my gear still working after 4 years) .
They are handling 15 k calls per minute and the network is not even sweating. Data wise they are consuming almost a gigabit link to brazil. Which is at 90 % usage , and ready to get a 10 gig link in place, (I am trying to talk them into peering with a us provider as well, but the us wants way to much $$).
I think the conspiracy is with us companies , they want to charge a premium for equipment that is already paid for.
I'd like to see something done about these corporate bonuses. As I have no doubt these are driving up costs of doing business for us.
As far as coverage maps goes , yes they just expect the phones to work , and they just do ! -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |
