I've had VoIP connections that sound just as good, if not better than, POTS. Guess who these connections used as a gateway? If you guessed MagicJack, you're right. SIP technology is at a point where, as long as you have 128 kbps of symmetric bandwidth with halfway-reasonable latency and jitter you can have a solid voice conversation.

That said, there are a LOT of places where AT&T doesn't provide that.
