Unless something's really wrong with your network, VOIP calls are pretty clear. But I suppose you're right, without some sort of standard, providers might keep reducing the codec bandwidths to save money.

Might? THEY WILL!!!! Look at cellphones, in the 1990s it used to be 14kbitps, FOURTEEN. Now is VBR 9.6kbitps and falling as low as 6 kbitps.
