Be careful of the sites you're running to. A lot of speed test sites out there are horrible.

I have best luck on speedtest.net and using Dallas and sometimes the north florida maclenny server is consistent for me as well, but not always.

I find that from here in polk county that Atlanta and Dallas/Houston are pretty consistant.

I find that from here in polk county that Atlanta and Dallas/Houston are pretty consistant.
Much of that is influenced by routing. BHN uses their Level3 transit sparingly (because it costs more), and tends to prefer their own national network (tbone) which was cobbled together when they acquired Adelphia.

Most of the traffic I've seen from the Tampa Bay region is routed through Dallas/FtWorth first, even if it's hitting an east coast destination. Worse, I've seen plenty of traffic take a leisurely TPA->DFW->Chicago->NYC or Wash DC path.

The speedtest.net server in Dallas is only ~35 ms away, whereas the Atlanta server is ~60 ms. Actually, the Atlanta server is reached via the path TPA->DFW->ATL.

The speedtest.net NYC server (hosted by OptimumOnline) is reached TPA->DFW->CHI->NYC.

The above is a lengthy, tedious, pathetically sub-optimal route, especially when you realize they COULD easily reach the same destination via their Level3 transit-- but choose not to, most likely because using tbone is cheaper. Here's what the path WOULD look like if they did use Level3 (taken from a host in Tampa that is connected to Level3).

For comparison, Verizon routes it's Tampa Bay traffic through Atlanta. The path to the same server shown in the traceroute above is half the distance (latency) and goes straight up... TPA->ATL->DC->Newark->NYC. It's been my experience that Verizon has very good routing paths most of the time.

So don't expect any decent speedtest results on paths that go around Red Robinhood's Barn before hitting the target, especially not from the Flash based tests.
