Re: Need to bridge Westell 9100VM for use as modem only

That thread is for a slightly different version of the 9100VM - the 9100VM that Verizon uses may not allow bridging to convert it to a VDSL-only modem...

And since you said you tried the steps in that procedure already, you may be out of luck.

Just curious, why do you want to use the D-Link? The Westell is a pretty powerful gateway device.

The Westell is 10/100 and 802.11g. My D-Link is Gigabit and 802.11n. It's a much better router than the Westell.

I may just call up Verizon and see if they will swap out my Westell for a stand alone VDSL modem.

Have you tried the instructions here:
»Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router?
That FAQ refers to the Actiontec, but the instructions should also work with the 9100VM.

It doesn't work that way - since you are using the 9100VM, you are VDSL2. Verizon only uses the 9100VM with VDSL2 ONT's. There is no alternative VDSL2 stand-alone modem for your situation.

Not sure I agree, I have both routers and the performance is the same for every application I have run and the Westel has better wireless G performance. If you want N connectivity, wire LAN to LAN and turn off the dhcp on the DIR-655

A friend of mine in another state has FiOS and I gave them my DIR-655 and they said it was A LOT better than the Westell.

Thanks More Fiber (and everyone else who contributed). The info in that FAQ allowed me to set up an acceptable workaround. Not the ideal solution, but it works until something better comes along and I don't have to throw any more money towards it.

Glad it worked for you.

Thanks for posting your question about the 9100VM. I was aware of the 9100VM from the Westell site. However, your post is the first report here of VZ deploying it. This makes one more variation to all the bridging configurations.

edit:
Removed incorrect referenced to first report of 9100VM.

The 9100VM has been deployed for almost 2 years - anywhere there is a GPON VDSL2 ONT in use, the 9100VM is required.

Thanks for the clarification Dave.

To date, most references here to VDSL with MDUs have been to separate (ZyXel) modems. I went back and searched and did find one reference to the 9100VM from Sept. and one from Jan. of last year, not counting the non-FIOS reference linked above.

Since the 9100VM supports VDSL2, would it be correct to assume it also removes the previous 20/5 speed limitation?

Current max. FiOS VDSL2 speeds are the 50/20 tier....

The highest symmetrical VDSL2 tier is 20/20.
