DirecTv service is going DOWN!

I first signed up with DirecTv because of their superior customer service. Dish's frankly SUCKED! I work as a contractor (sole proprietor) and in the past two months times have been VERY tough! Last month I had a 1500 dollar check bounce and it took the long time customer two weeks to make it good. This month I found out that another old customer declared bankruptcy on December 23rd, owing me $2500.00. My wife got laid off last August and can't find a job. Her unemployment barely covers our COBRA.

Last month I made a promise to pay DirecTV on a certain date-and I did. This month I called them as soon as I found out about the bankruptcy and was told to pound sand-that they only allowed a 'promise to pay' every six months and I had burned mine up the month before. Sure enough, on Jan 3rd, my service was cut off. I guess they call it 'minimum service-you get C-Span, NASA and a few god squad channels-I didn't even bother to look as even my local channels were gone. Today I finally got in another check and paid my bills (whew!). All the other creditors (Sprint, LADWP, AT&T) were understanding and willingly worked with me. DirecTv was the ONLY company that cut me off! Now to add insult to injury, they tell me that they won't credit me for the six days my service was on 'minimum', because that is a PUNISHMENT for late payment! It's not a lot of $$ (only about 24 dollars) but their ATTITUDE isn't what I've come to expect from them over the years.

To be honest, they've completely alienated me-and their cutting me off has made me realize something else-that I can do JUST FINE without them! There are more then enough digital over the air signals to keep my family satisfied-and the HD looks BETTER over the air! SO DirecTV, as soon as my current contract is done, I'm GONE! I hope that cutting your nose off to spite your face has satisfied you!

Things are tough out there, DirecTv and you should learn to work WITH your customers instead of alienating them! This isn't the service that I've come to expect from you!

That's rough qworster. It's rough for everybody out there, you'd think they'd rather keep a paying customer (even if you are a little late). Their loss.

How long have you been with them?
Been with them (no cable choice even to today) since 96 or so. That was back when YOU bought the equipment ($700-1400 can't remember) and YOU installed. That really meant something to them 4 or 5 years ago when trying to get a new dvr and locals later on since new customers got the royal treatment in terms of options. I mean after all why should they take a chance on a new sub but not offer free equip on contract to someone that's been in it for the long run?
These days, I don't think the retention dept would even try. But I guess with 18 million subscribers, one doesn't have much leverage anymore

I've been with them 18 months this time-but was also with them when I lived in RI a few years ago for 2 years.
I decided then that since my contract was up, I'd pack up the equipment and do a new service when I got to L.A. When I got here (there was a 20 month unexpected delay where we lived with my wife's parents in NJ as I was working in both Boston and Philly) I found that my HD Tivo DVR that I paid a fortune for was obsolete and I had to pay 200 dollars for the right to LEASE a new one from them.
I should have realized at that time that DirecTv had changed (Dish would have given me a two room HD DVR for free).

Feel for you qwor!
I had DTV quite some time ago and wanted to re-activate a receiver, but needed a card. Called up, spoke to some arrogant punk, and was told it was $20 + shipping. Called back to cancel once contract was up, having already setup Dish network, and the retention specialist apologized and said she would send that card FREE. Told her it was too late. That was 8 years ago. One idiot can ruin it for a company.
