[ TV] The new Quick Start Menu is here...

So the Quick Start Menu threatened by Rogers a short while ago has been carried through on this morning. What did I do as a customer to deserve this?

Now if I want the program guide which I use COUNTLESS times per day, I have to press Guide, wait a couple of seconds, and press Guide again. I can't even just tap the button twice, since the second hit doesn't register until the menu is fully loaded.

To add insult to injury, you know those two buttons on the remote - Guide and Menu - that always did the same thing, namely bring up the program guide? Well now they still do the same thing: bring up the Quick Start Menu. The Quick Start Menu should be on the actual Menu button, and the Program Guide should be on the Guide button.

And what useful stuff does the menu have? Links to channels! Oh, and a link to the real program guide and the DVR menu. Two things that of course already have buttons on the remote that still work perfectly fine thank you. Ah, but there's more: you can see the weather (although I've always been able to do that by tuning into the weather network)... you can see a categorized list of all HD or On Demand channels (even the ones you don't get)...you can play 4 tiny legacy cell phone-grade games... and you can reboot the box.

Of course there's also those 3 new "mix" channels with 6 news, sports or kids channels at once. Actually slightly nifty, you can select which audio to hear with the cursor menu. Except they can be accessed as regular channels, and don't require the Quick Start Menu at all.

So is any of it useful? Not to me. I'd like my easily accessed program guide back now.

quick start should be by pressing the settings button, n they shoulda left the guide button alone,

I noticed it this morning too. Seems quite Nifty to me. I like the weather feature. The games are kind of useless, but my wife likes that kind of thing. I do like the Channel Mix feature. I find it works quickly. I also like the quick access to HD. It looks like the Quickstart app can be easily modified and new features can be added over time. Maybe they can even build a new IPG into this app. Lets give it a chance.

My kids seemed to like it this morning and my wife does. Doesn't matter to me to much. I only watch a few channels and tend not to use the guide much.

I'd be happy if the Guide menu brought up the Guide and the Menu button brought up the Quick Start Menu. With two separate features now there is zero reason to have those two buttons do the same thing.

I'd even be slightly content if I could tap Guide twice quickly and bypass the QSM altogether.

PFFFFFFFFFFTT!!!

I just tuned into my DVR using my slingbox, and I have that quick start menu too.. what a crock!!! I'll be calling to voice my displeasure when i get home.

They do NOTHING to improve the guide itself or the DVR list menu, but they implement this. Just another advertising channel. Soon there will be ads when you click your guide button, 30 seconds and you cannot skip them.

Hasn't been inflicted on my part of Ottawa yet, but it sounds awful. Obviously it's having to download the program guide every time you ask for it now leaving it at the head end, instead of storing it locally. In theory of course that should mean that the dreaded date change stuff in the early morning hours should go smoothly instead of taking 15 minutes to 3 hours to get the updated guide downloaded.

On the other hand it sounds like this will mean that every program guide request will be downloaded, the response as usage gets heavier will get more and more pathetic.

Add to that all the dumb publicity they sent ... a letter, a flyer in the bill. Nonsense. Rogers needs to stop wasting money on fluff and fix real problems like the lag on the program guide, the date change issue etc.

MaryfromRogers ... are you here and have you seen this?

Not in Ottawa east yet. I too hate that bad late night lag getting the guide. First it's all there and then the box decides it needs an update but comes back blank so now I have no idea what time that show starts and on what channel but it was there just a minute ago. They should not blank the guide content until an update is available and downloaded to the box. If the new menu is that bad I'm not looking forward to this "new feature".

Harmony Remote to the rescue!!!

Set up a quick macro sequence to hit the guide button twice, and its barely a noticeable blip, and I have my guide with a single button press, and don't have to worry about the stupid quick menu thats laced with advertising for rogers internet or home phone.

O.K. I've "lived" with this ....."improvement" ...for a couple of days now.

My considered opinion...It's Pissing me Off!

How does my having to click on a button twice to get to where I used to be able to get to with one click qualify as an improvement? I'm like Sunfox See Profile I use the menu button scores of times everyday, so "just one more "click" is not a small inconvenience for something that is , as far as I'm concerned - no value added.

All this is , is a forced advertisement and a quicker link to Rogers On Demand, - as HiVolt See Profile has said, just forced advertising shoved down our throats. In other words it's only about more $$ for Rogers.

They are on the verge of loosing a high value customer ( Cable / Internet / Cellular ) over this crap. I'm actively investigating alternatives. Geezuz these egotistical Bastids piss me off.

They are going to get a call over this....not that I expecting them to give a rats ass.

This is not about powering on a certain channel. This is a modification to the Guide function, you hit the Guide button and this quick start menu pops up, if you want the old channel guide you need to press Guide again.

Rogers looks to have borrowed heavily from the ExpressVu's, mosaic apps. ie NHL, NFL etc. Thankfully, Bell hasn't tied their guide button to these apps.

Not yet, hehe... Remember, our favourite telco and cableco's aren't leaders, they're followers. so you can expect them to come up with something similar soon.

Explain to me why would they build a new IPG when they already have one that does the job just fine?

You're joking, right? Rogers guide is absolutely brutal. Its the same crap that came out with the SA boxes 12+ year ago. Looks like ass on HDTV's, no proper search, the DVR list is crap, I could go on and on.

Is this more of an issue with SA then Rogers? Or do they allow for better IPG's rogers just hasn't implemented one?

not really, the one we have now doesn't scam, plug or advertise Rogers enough.
