Re: [ TV] The new Quick Start Menu is here...

I know im stating the obvious here but the only thing Robbers listens to are its investors and how hard can its squeeze its subscribers in order to improve the bottom line.

Speak with your wallets folks, be an investor or walk. Take your business elsewhere.

Why waste your time complaining to the office of the president?

The nerve! Someone should DoS this bullshit page.
No, no... The ads we see on the new "helpful" Quick Start Guide are merely a side effect of um... having a bit of screen real estate to fill, and not the SOLE reason for Rogers to implement this helpful feature.

Wow.

"Interactive Program Guides provide advertisers with an uncluttered and unavoidable environment to promote their products and services."

I'm fine with ads on my TVGOS program guides (such as my OTA HDTV DVR) because the guide is free and costs me nothing per month for the service. I know that it has to be paid for somehow.

However Rogers is not a free service. In fact they are a rather expensive service. They even charge a premium for access to digital cable, supposedly for the extra features it provides such as the program guide. So now the digital services fee is not enough to cover this?

Rogers has 2.3 million basic cable subscribers. Let's say that just 1/4 are also subscribers to digital cable and are paying $2.99 per month. That's 575,000 subscribers paying $35.88 per year for the program guide. Or, 20.6 million dollers.

How much advertising revenue does Rogers expect to make off of this versus the ill-will it's going to generate? Are there any other cable or satellite providers who plug advertisements into a paid-for interactive service?

Actually I stand corrected. Roger's own advertising page claims 1.7 million digital households, all paying a $2.99 per month Digital Services Fee. That's nearly 61 million dollars per year, specifically and solely for the right to access digital services such as the IPG.

It would be like paying Bell's Touch Tone fee and then every time you dialed the phone hearing "This touch tone phone call brought to you by Harvey's"... um, no it isn't, I paid for it.

Talk about double dipping!

I took back my HD PVR and cut my cable bill by $80 per month last week. Also moved my Rogers Wireless to another Carrier yesterday costing rogers another $85 per month. Calling this advertising / marketing screen an "enhacement " is a joke and insults my intelligence. I guess they have done their risk analysis on new revenue from Ads vs lost revenue from dissatisfed customers.

I wonder if the ad revenue will be worth it from this. Advertisers aren't generally stupid. If they don't see an increase in business due to it, they'll stop paying for it. I am already trained to hit the guide button a quick two times. I don't see a single ad long enough to even know what company it is. Particularly since I don't stare at the bottom right of the screen during that split second. I suspect I'm like 99% of customers.

Maybe Rogers will counter that and further annoy their PAYING customers by instituting a mandatory 15 second "wait" on the ad screen.

Interesting, I'm not seeing the QSM on the 8300HD box, but it's still on the 3200.

Probably hasn't been updated yet, if you just got it today. I think they do the update checks/upgrades overnight.

I received a survey today from the Rogers Advisory panel. These were a few of the questions:

To what extent do you agree with the following: I would prefer if the Quick Start menu did NOT appear so that when I press my GUIDE button on my remote control the TV listings would immediately appear (as it did before the Quick Start Menu was introduced in 2010)?

To what extent are you satisfied with the new Quick Start menu overall?

As development of Quick Start continues and new features are added which of the following features would appeal to you?

The last question would indicate that it is here to stay!

I guess you could say it (QSG) was the straw that broke the camel's back. I was not locked into a wireless contract and was looking for a new blackberry last week. My Rogers Cable and Internet bill combined was $160 per month (HD PVR rental , full movie package ..etc) add in the $80 per month I was paying for wireless and that is (was) a $240 monthly relationship with Rogers. Given that all I got from them over the many years was increased monthly charges and less service the minor annoyance of having to hit the guide twice was a huge issue given they called it an "enhancement" when it was just a way to put an advertising screen in front of a "captive audience". So I down graded the cable by appox. $ 70 per month and cancelled the wireless.

Not sure if it was already noted, i didn't see it, but in March Rogers is updating the quick start menu to give users a choice of whether the standard guide appears first or the quick start menu.

i guess it was posted earlier...didn't feel like reading through pages of whining lol.

The new setting works well.

You have to get used to pressing EXIT when you want to close the guide rather than hitting GUIDE again, or else the Rogers Advertising System will pop up again.

What I did was move the Settings button to the Personal TV button (which isn't in use) and copy the Exit function to the Settings one. This way, I can get out of the guide more easily than "finding" the tiny Exit button.

Don't think I've seen this posted yet., Rogers replies to the criticism:

»redboard.rogers.com/2010/we-list···rt-menu/

Includes instructions on changing back to the old guide, and a comment section and customer feedback survey to show your displeasure.
