[DSL] D-Link DSL-2320B won't configure

I posted this in the D-Link forum over a week ago and got zero response so, as a last gasp, I'm re-posting it here. Thanx.

I bought this modem from a guy who used it with Quest. Configured my TCP/IP settings (Win2K on a single PC) per the user manual and hooked up the ethernet, phone and power. Manual said to log into the modem by keying 192.168.1.1 into my browser (Firefox), which I did, and all I get is a message (from the modem, I guess) that says I need an image file from my ISP. My ISP (Centurylink) is playing dumb. I'm stuck. If that means I need new firmware I don't know where to get it and I wouldn't know how to install it if I had it. Sage advice will be appreciated.

WHAT THIS PRODUCT DOES
»www.dlink.com/products/?pid=554

The D-Link ADSL2/2+ Ethernet/USB Modem (DSL-2320B) enables you to access a high-speed DSL Internet connection. Homes with a single computer can connect directly to the DSL-2320B and access the Internet. To share your high-speed Internet connection with multiple computers, simply add a multi-port router. In addition, the DSL-2320B automatically scans and detects your DSL settings, helping minimize set up time and hassle.

Can you post a screen capture of what you are seeing? There is no "image file" for ISPs, but there are Firmware Files for the Modem, but you don't need that.

»Avatar and Graphics Help FAQs »What software can be used for screen captures?

»/dev/null forum FAQ »How do I post attachments & screen shots?

This is what the setup is supposed to look like. It is a DSL Modem only. It does not support Routing. Use the Setup Wizard!

Walk through the setup, make sure your modem is set to this: VPI/VCI of 8/35

You will have to enter your username and password provided by Centurylink.

Hope this helps!

Centurylink has no image file to install for your device. If you cannot access a gui setup, that is not CenturyLink's issue. Why not just use the provided modem from Centurylink?

Possibly looking for a better modem and or trying to save the monthly modem charge.

O.K., I'm finally back. Using the button on the back of the modem I did a reset, turned it off and back on. I then keyed 192.168.1.1 into Firefox and got this request for a userid and password. Now what?

Also, Dr. Olds, I don't know what software you're showing screen shots for, but It isn't on the D-Link disk that came with the modem. It also doesn't contain any firmware files. Thanx.

admin = username
admin = password

I'm not showing any "software" screen shot images, I simply posted image captures from the Web Based Interface (HTTP) at »192.168.1.1 that is built inside of the Modem itself. You do not need anything but the Modem and a Browser to setup the Modem. The CD is not needed and the Modem comes pre-installed with Firmware.

The username and password worked! I got into the modem menu structure and entered the setup data.

Here's the Windows 2000 TCP/IP setup (I made no changes to the data that was in the DNS server section):

And here's the modem summary result:

The Power, DSL and LAN lights are green BUT the Internet light is red. I guess that's an improvement since it previously wasn't on at all.

I also tried changing the entry for the Preferred DNS Server to 192.168.1.1 but that made no difference.

I've double checked all of my entries and don't see anything amiss and also rebooted the system after each change.

Thanx so much for the help so far....I feel so stupid.

Need to know what type of connection your ISP requires. There are Bridged, DHCP, PPPoE, or PPPoA type connections.

Generally, a red Internet light indicates a user/password issue. You may try calling the help desk and verify that your credentials are correct.

Yes, I know what the red light means, I have the manual.

I also know my userid and password are correct because the Actiontec modem I'm using right now works properly with that information.

Here's the TCP/IP Properties for the Actiontec:

Here is the status summary for the Actiontec:

If you guys need more info I'll try and dig it up. Thanx.

You are missing matching all the settings from the Actiontec to the new Modem. NAT has to be on unless you are setup for a Public IP on the LAN side PC. You should verify the DSL connection type and as it shows PPPoE in the Actiontec that has to be identical in the new Modem. PPPoE not only requires a Username/Password to connect, but it also requires the right VC settings and correct protocols to connect (LLC Snap or VC-Mux). Something else doesn't match so there are at least two things causing the lack of connection.

Well, I can't find any place in D-Link's menus that says "turn on NAT" (whatever that is) or the equivalent. If that was required I would have expected their "Wizard" to deal with that along with sensing the required VPI/VCI settings, etc. Guess not, no big surprise.
Maybe D-Link's piece of shit is defective, don't know, but if not, I have no interest in retraining from Aeronautical Engineering to IT specialist in order to get their user-hostile product to work. I think I'm just gonna put a bullet through it so no one else has to suffer with it and make sure I never again buy a D-Link product.

It is there, but you are asking a Modem to have a feature normally only seen in Routers or Router/Modems.

NAT = Network Address Translation

It isn't defective and it shows to have DSL Sync on the WAN side along with getting a Public IP on the WAN interface just like the ActionTec does. I will say that that D-Link Modem is not any where that complex. As they say, it isn't rocket science.

Really? Just send it to me. I enjoy learning new hardware. With the User Guide, you should be able to get up to speed in a few days of study. You must understand basic networking of course.

It is documented as being part of the Wizard Setup on Page 26/Section 7 of the User Guide.
