Why cable isn't dead

Who owns the pipes? The cable companies and telcos. And the telcos are entering the cable TV space, like Verizon with FiOS TV and ATT with U-Verse IPTV.

Traditional cable TV isn't going anywhere. It will be supplemented by internet video sources, but cable TV isn't going nowhere.

Some of my neighbors are even on analog cable!

It may not be going anywhere, but if they plan to screw over their internet subscribers by raising rates to subsidize the TV viewers, I will happily begin subscribing to a growing number of wireless providers with high speed internet. WiMax is now peaking in the 14mbps range with 80-90ms pings. That makes it faster than my current internet, and the pings are now good enough for gaming.

I don't think they'll raise rates. What they will do (or are doing) is cap usage to make video less attractive, and also because everyone streaming video at the same time will bring the network to its knees.

Only wirleess internet in my area is Verizon 3g and that's $60 for a max speed of 700 kbps and a 5 GB monthly cap and $51.20 per GB overage. No thanks I'll pass.
