You don't have to use Linux/MLPPP on some Linux distributions, do you?
I use pppd that comes with Debian and it works well.
Something tells me Ubuntu package should work too, though I did not test it.

can you past you setting?
I use debian too, it stable but i get about 10% packet loss went there is moderate traffic on the connetion.
