[Extension] Persona messed up my FirefoxI tried a Persona to see what it would look like. It messed up my Firefox 3.6 display. There is now a black stripe between the menu/toolbar area and the main browser display area. One suggestion from the Firefox Help site was to delete localstore.rdf from the profile. That did not help. The next suggestion was to disable the Personas extension. That did not help either. I am attaching a screenshot so you can see exactly what I mean. This is default theme with Personas extension disabled. Tim |

No, that didn't fix it. Also, it lost my prior theme setup so I can't go back to it. Tim |

Did you make a backup of your profile folder before you updated Fx?
I have not used the Persona feature but you may try installing a regular theme for Fx v3.6 and see if that solves the issue. If so then reinstall the there you were using before. |

No, no profile backup. I will try a FF theme and see if that helps. I have never used themes or such, very much, I usually just keep things at default appearance (except for desktop wallpaper). I was just trying a persona because, after I installed 3.6, FF threw up a big fancy page touting them. It grabbed my attention.
Thanks, Tim |

It could also be an extension that failed (if you have any extensions or 3rd. Party Toolbars) which can happen with a new version of Fx.
Let me know what happens after you install a them from AMO. |

I uninstalled the Personas extension. My only other extensions are AdBlock Plus, Java Console, Java Quick Starter, and NoScript. They don't seem to indicate any problems.
Microsoft doesn't have XP themes, anymore. Everything looks like it is for Vista and 7, now. What is AMO?
Except for having the black stripe in FF, I have recovered my desktop settings and wallpaper to the way I like them. I am going to check MSIE and Opera to see if they look funny.
Thank you, Tim |

AMO is Mozilla Addons Site It does not matter if you have Vista or Win7 or XP the themes are dependent on the version of Fx you are using. I am using (one at a time of course ) Nautical, Gnome, or Winstripe Classic on Fx v3.6.1pre on a Win7 x64 notebook. |

Neither MSIE nor Opera have the problem. Oh, I forgot, we were talking about Firefox themes, not Windows themes. Too much stuff is going on. Yes, I spent about 30 minutes looking at FF themes. Most of them say they won't work with 3.6. Of the few remaining, I only like a couple, and both of those ask for money. Right now, I am just tired. I am getting too old for all this $&*#. Tim |

Lanik & I made 3 of them and I know they work with Fx v3.6 Here is one you can install and try out. Winstripe Classic 3.6.0.0 » addons.mozilla.org/en-US ··· don/6883 |

Excellent. Ironically, it is named "Win stripe Classic". And, unfortunately, my stripe is still there. Thanks very much, though. Tim |

On a whim, I decided to try Dogbert's timeless advice, "Shut up and reboot." But, that didn't help, either.

Two last things you can try before doing a clean install if you like Fx enough to do that. 1. Close Fx - Open the Fx Profile folder 2. Move these files to the desktop extensions.rdf extensions.cache extensions.ini xul.mfl XPC.mfl 3. Close the Profile Folder 4. Start Fx. Is the black bar gone now? If not move to the next step. If Safe Mode Works that shows that an extension or theme is causing the issue. -------------------------------- 1. Start Fx in Safe Mode and see if that solved the problem? » support.mozilla.com/en-U ··· afe+Mode--------------------------------------------------- Last but not least if you choose to reinstall Fx use the method below. Do not worry about it saying it is for Fx v3 as it is similar to Fx v3.6 and you should be able to get the gist of it. File locations are for a default install. Clean Install Instructions |

Grail Knight, I moved the three extensions files to the desktop. The xul and XPC files do not exist. I restarted FF and the black stripe is still there.
On to the next step.

I started Firefox in Safe Mode. The black stripe is still there. The Addons dialog says, "All add-ons have been disabled by safe mode."

I would just go ahead and perform a clean reinstall of Fx and report the issue to Mozilla Foundation.
The feature IMO was released a bit premature which is why I am not using it. |

Ok, I did the clean install. Here is my first screen in it. Tim |

A clean install should have fixed the issue so it may be something else causing it. Recent updates to the OS or programs, security software, etc..... You should pst this issue at the Person Feedback Site and also post a link to this page. » groups.google.com/group/ ··· as?pli=1 |

Ah, yes. There was a single Microsoft update, yesterday. And, since my problem is exactly like one for MSIE in another thread, I'll bet it is an OS problem. Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB978207) Now I have to figure out how to get back all my bookmarks and other stuff. Tim |
|

It is possible as the issue occurred after an update.
I added a link in my previous post to the Persona Feedback Site if you want to let them know about the issue.
If you have your bookmarks in IE8 still just export them and use Fx Bookmark Manger to Import the file.
Any other stuff like extensions and/or themes will have to be reinstalled. Once you are done with customizing Fx make a copy of that Profile Folder and store it. |

There was an html file in my old profile that had many of my bookmarks, so I imported it. Its not 100%, but its a lot better than nothing. And I've installed AdBlock Plus and NoScript.
I backup my hard drive pretty regularly. Maybe there is some way I can get more of my bookmarks from the most recent backup.

Ok, I just solved the "black stripe" problem. Something was checked in my View >> Toolbars menu called "Zone Alarm Spy Blocker", which to the best of my knowledge I do not have installed. I unchecked it and the black stripe is gone. After all that trouble. Tim |
