Re: Verizon Isn't That Bad

Since you're involved in discussions with an equipment vendor, can I assume that you're reasonably high up the food chain there? Would you have any success or likelihood of success getting us poor East Coasters some better service from the other half of the company? Which division of Verizon do you work for?

I'm not involved in that, I just know what is dessimated down through the ranks to the techs on the phones.
I'm with Verizon Select Services, Verizon's CLEC. I handle mostly west coast, a little bit of the ewast, but all GTE areas. I have nothing to do with Bell Atlantic at all.

Oh, sorry...the way you spoke, I was sure you were management or something....so you're actually in the division that's going out of business? I hope you've got something lined up with the parent company....?

We have no idea what's going to happen yet... There's rumors of what division is coming into the center but no difinitive answers yet... I'm waiting it out, if we get a campaign I don't like I'm going to Adelphia for cablemodem tech.

Well, good luck to you then.

There's so many people in my neighborhood who have GTE DSL, I'm not surprised my DSL hasn't come up yet. I'm just mad at Earthlink for not telling me what the problem is :/ Looks like it's all Covad for me.

Connection: Earthlink dialup, usually connect at 45333bps
Phoenix DSL status: Forget it
Earthlink order status: Recieved modem, December 11th is activation date

Re: Verizon Isn't That Bad

I know we all whine and moan, but I have to agree that the field techs and other technical support folks with our (former) GTE here in SoCal really know their stuff. I can't speak to the quality of the ISP side of the house, as I chose a different path.

I can testify that the Fujitsu stuff is backlogged when I receive my unit via next-day air on 11/01, and when peeking at its belly, it's mfg date is 10/26 and assembled in Israel. Talk about just-in-time!

One small correction. Verizon Online is not out of IPs. They are out of circuit capacity. In most areas, ADSL runs off of a frame relay backbone. The DSLAM is hooked to the Internet Provider's frame relay circuit, usually a T1 or T3. For example, a single T1 can accomodate up to about 900 users. Each user is assigned a DLCI on the circuit. If the circuit is full, then no more customers can be added. That was the case with Verizon Online when this was originally posted. Currenly, Verizon Online is out of circuit capacity in eastern Washington. Most internet providers do not have a contract obligation so if your order is being held up due to Verizon's lack of circuit capacity, my advice is to use another ISP until the cheaper service from Verizon Online is available. No sense waiting when there are tons of other ISPs available.

Comments from an ISP who uses GTE/Verizon in Northern Ohio GTE areas:

1. GTE has been out of CO DSLAM shelf capacity in all N. Ohio CO's for months and month. It's killing us, we can't sell a thing...and cable is starting up soon in the served areas. GTE could care less. They've missed every promised relief date they've given us since this happened in December 2000.

2. GTE uses Fujitsu DSLAM's and customer premise equipment, most of it is made by Orckit in Israel and private labeled. It is compatible with only Orckit equipment. There is no second source of any type I know of. We're all held hostage by this stupid decision to use Fujitsu equipment made by GTE management.
