Re: Best software to transfer a single large file? Are you trying to avoid IM clients altogether or just AIM? If this is a regular thing you will be doing, you could set up an FTP for you two, and you can just put the file(s) on the server and then, at the very least, just give your friend a regular link to download the file at his leisure.
As much as I dislike AIM, there direct connect/file sending capabilities are the most straightforward out of all the mainstream IM clients.
