DjXeR0 join:2003-10-24 Massillon, OH 2 edits | 4850 x2 or 5770? I'm doing some upgrading to my system and need a little bit of help on the video card.
I'm not a big gamer but I am planning on getting a 24" monitor so I would like to get a card that can run games well enough at 1920x1200 yet still have it fit into my budget. This has led me to the following two cards...
SAPPHIRE 100270SR Radeon HD 4850 X2
SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770
Unfortunately I don't have the time to keep up with this stuff like I used to so I don't know which to pick. The 5770 having DirectX 11 and requiring less power is nice but then again I'm not sure how important DX11 really is and I don't mind using a little more power if it produces results. I really care less about having a perfect looking game and more about a well running game.
The motherboard I'm getting (Asus P5E3 Pro) does support CrossfireX so I may buy a 2nd card within the next year as well. Not sure if that would sway things one way or another.
If there is another card I should be looking at please let me know. Like I said I can't keep up so any help I get on this is greatly appreciated. |

MrPremium join:2002-12-25 | reply to DjXeR0 Cant go wrong with a 5770 i have one right now, and its unbelievable for the price, and hey check out the reviews for 5770 in crossfire. Pretty tempting if you ask me. |
|
 | reply to DjXeR0 avoid crossfire and dual-gpu cards when possible. besides the 5870 and 5970, the 5000 series cards are a little overpriced for the performance besides adding eyefinity and DX11. i would still prefer a 5770 over a 4870 if the price is close but the 4890 is pretty significantly faster than both for not much more.
the 5770 will be fine for you and offers the latest technology. the 4890 is a little faster, possibly cheaper, but wont support DX11, triple monitors, etc.
i wouldnt consider the 4850x2. -- Somnambulator - t3h 5133pw41k3r

 | reply to DjXeR0 I have a Sapphire 5770 that replaced a 3870 toxic, and runs every thing pretty well for the price.
I have played STALKER SOC and CS with no issues with every thing maxed. Farcry 2 maxed with no issues.
I can run 3 eve clients as well now at max settings as well.
Low power with grate performance, can not beat it. |

5770 is a complete waste of money when compared to a $200 4850 X2 2GB, they are not even in the same ballpark, 4850 X2 is a lightyears ahead of this little, thin boy called 5770.

Plus two 5770 will eat that for dinner. Except they won't and they are ~$350 (vs $~$200 4850 X2 2GB), performing between 5850 and 5870, which is roughly where a 4850 X2 2GB is. --

 | reply to DjXeR0 I have a Vapor-X 5770 and it exceeded my expectations. Can't go wrong with the $150-200 price tag either. |

 | 5770's are going for about 150 each. I'm not sure where people are pulling "$180" from. It's such a cool and power efficient card and a great OCer. Don't bother with the 4850s. You'll want dx11 support when it gets here anyway. |

It's such a cool and power efficient card and a great OCer. Don't bother with the 4850s. You'll want dx11 support when it gets here anyway. It's such a crappy card with its half-assed memory bandwidth - 128-bit and 256-bit is pretty easy to understand, I thought...
When someone asks about 4850 X2 2GB is more than funny to bring up power efficiency, nobody gives a crap about it, quite obviously.
Ahh and for DX11: 5770 is already weaker than 4890 was in DX10, it's got crippled memory pipe - though faster memory modules help a lot to alleviate this problem - so expecting it to be useful in DX11 is more than a pipe dream...
4850 X2 2GB ~$200 is a far better gamer choice than the crippled 5770 unless he wants to buy two 5770s immediately, for ~$400. --

I see the 512mb version for 135 shipped and 120 after MIR. I see an XFX 1gb going for 155 shipped. So I'm not sure why you keep saying 170-180. Most of those expensive cards are based on the v1 coolers which are more expensive and are worse at cooling the GPU than the cheaper newer v2s. You can read about that here:
»anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=664
The HD5770 may have a 128 bit mem interface but it still has more memory bandwidth than the 4850 (76 gb/s on the 5770 and 59 gb/s on the 4850) thanks to its high frequency GDDR5.
Obviously the 4890 will have more raw power, but it is older tech and needs a mini nuclear reactor to power it compared to the 5770. The 5770 isn't even meant to beat the 4890. The 5770 is a upper mid range part vs the 4890 which is a flagship in its own line.
You could get 2x4850s for around 230-250 which is fine if you don't mind having more heat, power usage and decent bang for the buck performance but you don't care about tech (DX11, eyefnity, stream, etc) and are willing to upgrade again when dx11 games come out very soon.
For 310 you can get 2x5770 which would give you quite a bit more performance than the 4850 setup, a much more power efficient set up (18W at idle each) which runs very cool, plenty of OC headroom, all the latest tech such as stream, eyefinity, etc. Maybe a 5770 might not be able to handle the more demanding dx11 games at 1920x1080 but you can drop the resolution just a tad and still play very well. You should be just fine even at higher resolutions if you had 2 of them. When games using all of these new features come out, you're gonna wish you had that tech. |

Well, you can go a totally different route also. Get 2 older 8800 GT cards and SLI them (if you have a SLI motherboard). These cards are like $50 apiece now, if you can find them.
I run (2X) 8800 GTs in SLI (they are eVGA brand) and while they will not win any performance contests, they are a good option until you can go really high end.
BTW, just to compare, I run a 26" main monitor for gaming, and run most games at 1920 x 1200. I was getting about 80-90 FPS in CoD4 yesterday, and when I recorded using FRAPS, I got about 30-35, but that was using the full screen recording option and 50 FPS setting. Those raw .avi files are huge, lol. Two minutes was over 4GB. |
