Re: 4850 x2 or 5770?

Someone REALLY-REALLY needs to understand that his idiotic 2x 4850 != our 4850 X2 2GB which is around $180-200...
You keep saying this but you obviously haven't bothered to verify it with regard to the current market. The 4580x2 was discontinued months ago and the surplus supply has dried up. You'll be lucky to find one anywhere, let alone for anything approaching $180-200.

It's this simple: the 4xxx Radeon cards are effectively dead. They're being phased out; what you see for sale is mostly surplus. The 5770 is currently the best all-around card you can buy (and actually find) in the $150-200 price range. Yes, it's typically a bit slower than a 4870, but not to the point where you would actually notice it outside the benchmarks--and it uses considerably less power and puts out less heat (which is great if you're overclocking anything or planning to Crossfire). Crossfire two of them and you have a setup that will slightly outperform the 5850 in most instances at roughly the same price.

Personally, I bought a 5770 as a stop-gap--I'm still running a 1280x1024 monitor, so I don't need much more than that. I'm waiting to see what happens this summer with nVidia Fermi--hoping that it will be seriously competitive with the ATI products and spark a major price war. Depending upon what happens, I'll grab a new monitor and either pick up a 5850 (if it drops into the low $200 range, and assuming 5770 prices don't drop as well), another 5770, or go with whatever nVidia has on the market.
