MoFi 3G 3500 router and Rogers Rocket Stick

I am just posting this to update everyone on my router (mis)adventures. I bought two Cradlepoint routers a few weeks ago only to discover that neither one supports the Rogers Wireless network (at least not with the ZTE MF636 Rocket Stick). I have asked them PLEASE to unlist Rogers.

I can now tell you that I have been running with a MoFi 3G router all day today and have yet to suffer even one unexpected disconnect. In fact this router seems to be set up for this particular use as all defaults are designed for use on the Rogers network.

So I have two Cradlepoint paperweights in their respective boxes languishing in the basement and collecting dust.

The MOFI3500-3GN is one of the best 3g router today.

The next firmware update will have many new features that will be on par or ever surpass the most expensive units on the market.

Support is the key and they will keep up with all the new sticks and make sure they are updated in the router ASAP.

Not to mention it is 300MB/s!!! This is the fastest speed today and it is the fastest 3G router on the market!

Printer server (take any printer and make it work like a network printer where anyone that is on the network can print to the same ink jet printer without wires)

Storage sever (take any usb stick or usb hard drive and connect it to the usb port and now everyone on the network can have access to all the files on there. This may be pictures, music, word doc, anything!

Future is Mobile Internet and that is where the name MoFi is derived from.

WiFi is the past, MoFi is the future!!!

This is also a high quality unit with a 1 year no hassle warranty.

Best of all, most dealers have a 7 days free trial on them currently so they want you to try it, it is does not work, you have do not have much to loose.

If the Rocket Stick is plugged into the MoFi 3G 3500 router's USB port then how how do you connect the USB printer to the MoFi 3G 3500 Router's Print Server capability?

The same for the Storage Server?

The MoFi 3G 3500 router has ONE USB port --- does the MoFi 3G 3500 router fully support connecting a USB HUB? If Yes then I can see where the Router can do all the things you suggest with the Rocket Stick connected.

I purchased the MoFi 3G 3500 router for one of my clients .... expected to arrive next week ... so I will be testing this out and if it works with a USB Hub THAT will certainly be very unique and most impressive for this class of gear.

For readers of this thread -- I will post my results.

I have now used the MoFi for a few weeks now. I can honestly say that for use with the Rocket Stick, it is simply great! Not one disconnect and the speeds are on a par with plugging the Rocket Stick directly to the computer. Presently my computer is connected to the MoFi via the Ethernet LAN port and I can also connect other devices (iPhone, Wii, etc.) via WiFi. The only suggestion that I would make is that if you are connecting to the iPhone or Game console, you should probably disable the requirement to log in to connect.

Not only is the connection through the MoFi more stable than either of the Cradlepoints, the WiFi signal is also much stronger so I can use other devices from farther away.

Hi MOFIMAN. I am wondering (hoping) if the next firmware update will be Macintosh OS X 10.6 friendly. Any word on that?

I've had it up to here with Rogers and their firmware updates being only available to Windows users!

Router arrived and much to my surprise [and shock] connecting a USB HUB to the MoFi 3G 3500 router worked to power the Rogers Rocket Stick plus a HP Photo-smart USB Printer --and Yes I was very surprised that both printer and Rocket Stick worked well -- so the MoFi firmware does have very special capabilities not found in other wireless Routers that I have so far tested [and I have tested -- many]. Only time will tell how stable the MoFi will turn out to be but as of now I am very impressed with the MoFi solution from a Rogers Rocket Stick perspective.

IF you are going to use a USB HUB with this router -- positioning the HUB is important -- IF the Rocket Stick does not have sufficient "AIR" Internet connectivity can be spotty --- I found that as long as the Rocket Stick was Vertical placed in the USB HUB connectivity was stable in the period of time that I was testing [4 hours] -- if the Rocket Stick was horizontal [lying flat on a desk while connected to the USB HUB] then internet connectivity was very spotty - so positioning the USB HUB and making sure that the Rocket Stick has AIR is the better configuration -- so the type of USB HUB needs to be factored in.

IN so far as the "N" Router wireless capabilities go -- I had one wired computer connected to the MoFi LAN port and one wireless computer using "N" interface using WPA2-AES and throughput WAN/LAN was good -- wireless was not exceptional but certainly good -- as time passes on that will determine how well this wireless Router stands up.

IMO, the MoFi 3G 3500 router is a good Rocket Stick sharing solution for people that have no other alternative for high speed connectivity and want to share that connection.

The MoFi is now installed in my Client's location [Carp Ontario] so as time passes I will be in a better position to comment on their experience assuming problems crop up. BTW, My Client had XPLORNET prior and were very unhappy with the XPLORNET satellite performance --- the Rocket Stick is dramatically faster [consistently so] and much more reliable.

Re: MoFi 3G 3500 router and T-Mobile Stick

I am in Florida and just purchased the Mofi and am having problems getting it to work with a T-mobile stick. Downloaded the latest firmware from their site but still not supporting. Anyone know how I can get the unit to work with the T-mobile stick.

Re: MoFi 3G 3500 router and Rogers Rocket Stick

I believe the T-Mobile stick is the UMG-181 made by Huawei Technologies. If I were you, I'd check with support@mofienetwork.com and ask if there are certain settings that you need to enter to make it work properly with the T-Mobile network. The default settings in the router may or may not work properly with the router.

I contacted support and they advised me it should be supported in several weeks. I will wait as the T-mobile stick is really a fast connection and excellent internet.

The MOFI3500-3GN is a new router and it has some support for the USA market but the first step was to get 100% support for the Canadian market which is completed.
It is now I believe the only 3g router to support all the sticks in Canada!!!

For the USA market, it is scheduled to have 99% support in about 2-3 weeks from now.
There are many smaller providers that will get the support but the first step is to have 100% support for Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and Cricket.
Other providers such as Clear will also be supported soon also.

There are many new sticks that has been introduced in the USA market recently which MOFI NETWORK as already started the process to add the support.
Once these new sticks are added, MOFI NETWORK will be the undisputed leader in the 3G support and will continue to update as new sticks gets released.

Many other countries around the world are working with the MOFI router also and currently, there are over 100 modems supported which is already the most of any of the 3G router.

USA has 300 million people and for those that have purchased the MOFI router and are awaiting the support for their sticks, the best bet is to send an email to support@mofinetwork.com and include the model number of the stick and the service provider so they can verify for sure when that stick will be supported.

When the support is ready, there will be a firmware update which is not hard to do and the support team at MOFI will walk you thought it if you are afraid but note that there is a 1 year no hassle warranty also and MOFI stands behind their quality and reliability.
There will also be some video posted on the MOFI site soon on how to do the update as well how to set up the router and other features that are available.

Hope everyone who has the MOFI3500-3GN are happy with it as it was designed to be the best at a great price without cutting down on quality.

I personally have bought some other brands which are doorstops as they decided that support was not important and this is one of the reason why MOFI is dedicated to support as without that, you have a 3G router that does not do 3G!

@telus.net

Hi Everyone,

I am planning on installing a ZTE 688 Rogers stick in a MoFI 3600 and putting it at my cottage. The MoFI will be powered all the time and it is my desire that I be able to remotely connect to my network to access my solar inverter (off grid power system) and to access network cameras for monitoring and security. I have a Linux based computer connected (wired) to the 3600. I would use DDNS (DynDNS)

I have never owned a stick and am worried that the connection will not be persistent and once broken I will not be able to connect remotely. I also plan to have the 3600 on a timer so that it only runs from 9 am to 6 pm (to save power).

Q: Anyone have experience with remotely accessing a configuration like this? Will it work if I am away for a week? month?

Q: Upon reboot I guess I would have to hack something together to log me back into the MoFi. Is there a workaround where the password login can be disabled if desired?

Thanks Much!
G

First thing I would suggest is to test the Rocket Stick at your cottage and see if you are able to get the kind of persistent connectivity you desire -- remembering that its a wireless system that prone to some factors that you or rogers have no control over. If after testing this out for at least a week and you are satisfied with the results Acquire the MoFi 3G 3500 router.

Rogers offers a 30 day money back guaranty on the Rocket Stick -- so if the Rocket Stick does not provide the kind of stable connectivity you are expecting you can cancel the contract and get your money refunded within the 30 day period.

Once you connect the Rocket Stick to the MoFi Router the Mofi Router will automatically establish the connection to Rogers -- so you do not need to worry about passwords etc.

Insofar as power and remote control of the power You must have a power source that has some intelligence -- so if you have that solution in place -- the rest is up to your ability to programme the desired outcome.

Assuming that you are happy with the connectivity that the Rocket Stick provides [after testing] and With the proper remote access solution [Rocket Stick + MoFi + Client remote access capability] you should be able to accomplish your desired objective.

UPDATE: I had to remove the USB HUB -- Client complained of far too many issues using the USB HUB with this Router;

issues like the Internet dropping frequently and the inability to get scanning and faxing working using a HP multifunction USB printer. While connected to the USB HUB Printing worked however the greater concern in this specific environment was the very unstable Internet connectivity.

Perhaps future firmware may solve the multifunction aspects. Insofar as the Internet dropping frequently when using the USB HUB I did not have enough time to determine what may be the issue but I do suspect positioning [AIR] the USB HUB is at the root of the internet connectivity issue. Using a USB HUB will require significant testing.

At this time I strongle advise against the use of a USB HUB with the Mofi Router.

We have tested the unit with the Rogers Stick and a cheap USB hub: Cable Unlimited Model: USB-1810 and there has not been any disconnect with the hub and the stick.
A Canon ink jet printer was attached and we can print and use the 3G stick perfectly with no issues.

If you are looking to use the printer just for printing and the 3G stick and have a decent signal to begin with, there should be no issues using a hub with the MOFI3500-3GN.

We did noticed there is a drop in signal strength for the 3G signal when the hub is connected so unless you have a decent signal to begin with, I would not recommend a hub to use either.

For those that live in areas where the signal is weak, you should look into an external antenna for the stick providing that the stick has an antenna input.

Not working with Verizon UM175 usb stick.

The MOFI router was designed by a Canadian company and the first goal was to focus on the Canadian providers which they have done and all providers in Canada with all sticks currently covered.

The next step which work has already started was to do this for the USA market.

The USA market is very large and has many small providers.

The router is working with various sticks from each provider but there are about 15 new sticks that are in the process of being implement for the US providers including the UM175

As such, for any customer buying the router in the US, I would recommend them to send an email to MOFINETWORK to verify that their stick will work until this new firmware is released.
