Re: [DSL] D-Link DSL-2320B won't configure

said by COJones:

Well, I can't find any place in D-Link's menus that says "turn on NAT" (whatever that is) or the equivalent. If that was required I would have expected their "Wizard" to deal with that along with sensing the required VPI/VCI settings, etc.
It is documented as being part of the Wizard Setup on Page 26/Section 7 of the User Guide.

Well, hey, BigVe is right about the "patience" part but I never expected setting up a modem had to be a hobby. Also, I've not asked this modem to do anything other than what the manual said but, apparently, it and its Wizard are incomplete.
The fact is that when using the manual -or- automatic setup options that D-Link offers, the "NAT" window shown on p.21 of the user manual never shows itself.
I'm assuming that means something in the window of p.20 needs to be checked or filled in other than the userid/password? I'll beat on it some more tomorrow.
Finally, don't let a lack of patience mean I don't appreciate the help, because I do.

Four days later I still can't get the page with the NAT selection on it to show up in the D-Link installation process. Did you guys run out of help?

Setting up a modem should not be this difficult. If the screens on the modems web interface do not match the manual, then you may have a customized version that will only work with the provider that originally supplied it.

You have not said if you are on a PPPoe or DHCP account. This makes a big difference in trying to connect. Also, the TCP/IP setting on the PC should be set to automatic for both the IP address and DNS servers.

No, not yet but you have to update that you were not able to setup NAT. Since you have made so many changes and used multiple configurations yet are getting no where, I highly suggest a Factory Reset to defaults. Then start over with the Wizard using the User Guide as a step by step guide and see if it now matches page for page. An old incorrect choice the first time may have locked out the NAT page.

If after a Factory Reset and you are unable to get it to work, you should contact D-Link and request assistance or request a refund.

O.K., I've had it, I'm done, cash me out. I did a reset on the unit and the auto configure wizard set it up as VPI/VCI=8/35 with PPoA. The earlier screen shot I supplied of my Actiontec when it was working shows the account is PPoE. I did another reset and manually set it up as 8/35/PPoE and it still doesn't work. In neither case did I get the window about enabling NAT shown on p.21 of the manual. I expected better for my $25 even if it was second-hand. Thanks to all for the guidance.

Some ISPs DSLAMs support both PPPoA and PPPoE, But they only tell you they support PPPoE. The PPPoA support is sometimes enabled in the hardware (my ISP only supports PPPoE, but I've used PPPoA for 10+ Years on their DSLAMs) and works similar to PPPoE, so you should run through the User Guide steps (bypass the Wizard this time) after another Full Reset and see how that goes. Try the steps using PPPoA first and if that does get you to the NAT page going in order of the User Guide by clicking "Next" after filling out each page, then try PPPoE again.

Did you find the Reset steps in the User Guide?

Did a reset two different ways: [1] Button on back for 10 sec. and wait a minute -or- [2] Tools+System+Restore Default Settings from the D-Link software. Set up PPoA and PPoE after doing each type of reset and never got the NAT page. No workee either way.

Here's a new wrinkle.
...After doing the button-on-back reset I'd get the following window after keying in 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. If I then turned the unit off then on, 192.168.1.1 got me to the modem log-in window.
...Keying in 192.168.1.1 after doing the reset from inside the D-Link software I'd get to the log-in window w/o turning the unit off/on.

I'm thinking this modem was used on the X-Files.

Try doing a firmware update with the latest version from the D-Link website.

Or it was a very early firmware release and has buggy code in it. As posted by billaustin See Profile I too agree on updating to the latest Firmware Code to see if this gets the missing NAT page. Now wouldn't that be a kick in the pants!

D-Link shows two firmware files, I ignored the one for Vista. Unzipped the other one and the D-link software said I needed a valid file name when I tried to use it. File comes name only with no file extension (?). Also found this firmware on this site: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22731569-Info-DSL2320B-rev-A2-new-NONOEM-firmware-released which also has no file extension. Whazzup wi dat?

Click for full size
This is the newer Firmware by date and it is called "dsl2320B_firmware_2900.zip"

Inside the zip file the filename is "DSL-2320B Firmware for windows Vista_2900" and does not have an extension.

O.K., fine, although I don't know why I'd want a version labeled with "Vista" when my first post stated I have Win2K.
In any event, I unzip the file to my desktop, browse to it in the Software File Name field and when I hit the Update Software button it says to enter a valid file name (like I said in my previous post). Apparently the D-Link program doesn't like the file.

It probably is looking for a filename with a .bin extension (or something similar). Look at some of the other downloads and see what they have. Try renaming the file to firmware.bin and see what happens.

The file name is for the D-Link Hardware, not for your PC. It doesn't matter if you are using Win 9x, Win ME, Win XP, Win2K or Linux even as the Firmware has nothing to do with the OS on the PC as it doesn't change anything in or on the PC. I repaired a dead Speedstream DSL Modem once that had Tobago in the Firmware's filename and I don't live anywhere near there.

I looked briefly into that but didn't find an answer yet and the file may need to have .IMG or .BIN added to its name so that the Modem will use/install the "Image File". This is strange as most Manufacturers create the filename completely compatible with any needed naming conventions. Also try to point the Modem Firmware Upgrade page to the intact "dsl2320B_firmware_2900.zip" file "as is" since the Modem may know how to extract all by itself and we might be messing up the process by taking the file out of the .ZIP file.

Used the .zip file and got asked for a valid file name
Changed extracted file name to a .img, ditto.
Changed file name to a .bin, ditto.

P.S.: Nuts. I'd bet 99.9% of computer users would think "windows Vista" in a file name would refer to the OS.

I agree with you that the naming is strange, but I know Firmware that has Vista in the filename will still be backward compatible OS-Wise since the base hardware connection from the Modem to the PC is Ethernet and that is OS indifferent.

Call D-Link Support on their Toll Free Number 800-326-1688 found here:

»gethuman.com/D_Link_Systems/phon···_no.html

and ask them what is the "stupid tech trick" to update the firmware and see if they will tell you and maybe even send you a working firmware file via email. It can't hurt to ask as the worst thing is you end up right where you are right now with no forward progress.

O.K., this doesn't make any sense but here's the story:

When I signed up for CenturyTel (it's now CenturyLink and nothing is any better) they gave me an overall username and an account password. This was not to be confused with my email address and email password which were different. Anytime I had to fart with my internet connection I always had to put in the username and email password when asked for a username and password. To me this didn't make much sense and early on I had problems with all that because I'd key in the username and account password instead and nothing would work. Anyway, I finally got that convoluted crap straightened out in my head and all was well.

As you know, I've been beating my head against a wall trying to get my second modem to work and had zero luck. I've had to hook up one modem and then the other and ended up repeatedly keying in my username and email password back and forth to get my old modem to work again after the test of the new one still didn't work.

D-Link only advised against a firmware upgrade and repeated the standard configuration procedure, not much help but it took 5 e-mails to arrive at that info (idiots). Yesterday, I was again experimenting with the new modem, the test failed and so I keyed in all that stuff like I'd done a 100 times before to get my old modem working and found that it wouldn't hook up to the internet. Went through all the stuff several times and it still wouldn't work. Just for the hell of it I keyed in my account password instead of my email password and it worked! I shut the modem off, hooked up the new one and put the same info into configuring it and now it works too.

So it has come to a resolution based on the phase of the moon or something else with no basis in logic. Both modems work, yay! That's all I wanted. Thanks for suffering along with me.
