The FBI is and always was the main investigators of white collar crime in the US. Their national security mandate makes up a small percentage of their workforce. Those duties are handled by many other intelligence agencies trained specifically for anti-terrorist work. |

 | reply to vdiggy While I, too, question the cost:benefit ratio for cracking down on these modders, I have to admit, how much does it really cost to track down someone who advertises their "wares" in plain sight (or, in this case, site). They probably put the Academy interns on these cases. |

Should cops only investigate murders and forget about rapes and theft? Same goes for the FBI which is why there are different departments.
Tell you what the FBI can use my tax dollars for investigating these types of crimes and use yours for national security. -- Facts not FUD. |

However, in a time of fiscal insecurity, the FBI should be focusing on real threats. Of course, this one case doesn't prove anything about the FBI not focusing on 'real' threats.

I know two people who got stolen items returned to them specifically because of the investigators doing their job. And in each instance the perpetrators were arrested. Although I have no idea what the final outcome was for them. the investigators found leads interviewed people etc, to find the people that stole the items.
They need to lock the people up using and selling these modified cable modems. People would think twice about doing it. |

The FBI is well with in their area to police this.. ie" FEDERAL Bureau of Investigations.. ... "hard earned tax dollars"... seriously, some of the BS in this thread is getting deep...
And who says this isn't a matter of national security? It very well can be just that.. just as epidemic health problems are also a matter of national security. Seriously, you need to study up a little more on what makes a country run.
If people grab anonymous internet access, that very well can be a threat to national security... or do you not get that? Remember 9/11? Most of those people operated under the radar.. who's to say that these modems, or modems like this, can't be used by such a group of people for illegal activity?
Same thing with gun laws... gun laws are silly and useless.. it just means that those who are following the law will be more easily tracked in the time they need to be.. you think criminals are out registering their guns? No.. they do it under the table to make it easy to cover their tracks..
If you think anything else-wise to my post, then you're sadly mistaking yourself and not understanding how criminals work and WHY they do what they do NOT to get caught... I mean, who's to say THIS guy was doing anything to harm the country.. prolly not... but who's to say that HIS work doesn't or can't get into the wrong hands... think about it.. and please, call me crazy now for my thinking... I just thank god that law enforcement things the same way becuase in crime, WE have to be right ALL the time (the good guys).. they, the criminals, only have to get it right once. |

ALL threats are real... law enforcement, if you haven't noticed, is not budget affected... there will always be money for enforcing laws.. and this IS a real "threat"... anyone that wants to break or violate our laws "ARE" threatening us.. all of us.. you just don't care to realize why or how.. |

 | reply to vdiggy 1) fbi does more than just 'national security'. they have multiple departments that focus on different crimes. anyone who thinks going after one specific crime means they arent focusing on other things is just foolish
2) selling modems that can hide your identity can easily be considered a national security issue. do you want some radical terrorist browsing the internet and recruiting people without being able to be tracked down ??? |

Really, why would anyone planning major illegal activity risk all of their "big plans" by committing piddly little crimes (though, yeah, there may be some that are really that stupid). By and large I think the people who do this are either poor or cheap, or do it for "fun" or "thrills" or whatever, or all of the above... but national security threats? ...very low likelihood. |

| reply to fiberguy said by fiberguy:If people grab anonymous internet access, that very well can be a threat to national security... here is a thought, fix the cable network so it cannot be hacked like this. obviously they know that it can be done relatively easily. terrorists won't go to loudmouths like this to get their access they will hire someone who knows what they are doing and pay them to shut up.
i'm not going to say the fbi doesn't need to investigate this, they do need to. but the cable co's need to step up and do their part too. shut down the gaping hole in their networks. -- sbcglobal.net speedtest result 11/11/09 - 5256kbps |

You may not agree with any/all expenditures, but that is what taxation with representation is about. |
