Re: Waste of tax dollors

Obama has sent a 14 million dollar project to Alaska through his stimulus funds package.Ouzinkie is a village which has a total size of 7.7 square miles, 6 square miles of which being land. Its population is approximately 200 people and it is located on Spruce Island.

they're building a new runway.. the current runway is 2000' and the new one is 3000'... it's a rural area with poor weather. it'll have a greater chance of landing issues and they'll have to use smaller planes thus making it even more dagerous. I don't see an issue with spending the money

The issue is what they spend the money on. That town doesnt even have traffic lights! And its not dangerous cause no one goes in or out of there often enough. That "project" is no high priority. And neither is that high speed rail in tampa that no one wants or will ride.

they probably get monthly or bi-weekly shipments of mail and supplies (groceries etc). This would be occurring every month of the year. Yes, there's only a few people that live there BUT it's still a "small" amount for how long it'll be used for

ok but in any case spending that money on that project right now is not important. I'm sure that money can be used for something else that can have a greater impact.

The thing that's amazing is how it will be just a *gravel* landing strip for $14 million dollars?

The labor in that area should be cheap. A half-mile of gravel should cost less than $1 million.

It sounds like they're importing gravel and machinery (plus operators) from more expensive areas. So, the stimulus will be for those areas (and the mariners who transport everything).

yes.. you'll buy the gravel for 1 million and how does it get there?... how much do you think it'll cost to have it flown to that location?... sounds like the only way to access it is by flying after all.

How many people that live in that community can drive or are licensed to drive a car let alone a dump truck, grader, steam roller etc. ?

Labour should be cheap... do you think they're using shovels?... sure if they're hiring people to use a shovel or a pick axe and if you don't mind the project taking a hundred years.

This project is NOT in an urban area.. you have to look at the logistics.

edit:
googled the village
»maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&source···c=A&sa=X
looks like shipping it in would be possible BUT the cost of shipping that amount of gravel??

possibly.. but it will have to be done eventually and that doesn't mean it's a waste of tax dollars. More likely than not it'll be more expensive to do it later.

you live in florida.. close to mexico, you must be mexican

You do realize that BC alone is
944735 square kilometres
that's 1/10th the size of the entire USA.... if you live in the middle of the province... nothing is that close
