Socket 478

I just revived a P4 with Socket 478. The computer is great except the CPU fan is too loud. It looks like one of the Zalman 7000 monsters may fit in it. Are they as quiet as they are advertised to be?

The power supply is really quiet.

I have a second computer with a brand new but noisy power supply. It was sold as a low noise 450. It's not low noise. What would you recommend?

My personal opinion of them is that they are not worth the hassle. The design of the cooler makes them somewhat difficult to install. They are quiet when coupled with a Zalman (or other) fan speed controller set to a very low speed. Depending on your use case the cooling may then not be adequate.

For a Socket 478 my recommendation would be one of these Nexus units:

I like it, but they're out of stock for a month. I'll keep looking. Hopefully they're not discontinued.
