Re: Still waiting... said by Karl Bode:I still feel like they would have been better off just making a slick, thin netbook.... Agreed. If this thing ran a scaled down version of OS X, I'd seriously contemplate buying one. My girlfriend wants a simple tablet she can carry to class and take notes on ... but tablet PCs are outrageously priced. This would fit the bill perfectly ... but it doesn't even have handwriting support.
I am curious as to how this fits into the Apple eco-system, as I've yet to hear of anything compelling about it, especially if you have a laptop and a smartphone. Apple is known for home runs, but they've also had some spectacular failures, I wonder if this will eclipse the AppleTV as the red-headed stepchild of Apple? |

en102Canadian, eh? join:2001-01-26 Valencia, CA | reply to Matt I agree... this 'would' be a great device, IMO, however, its too stripped down to be really useful besides basic browsing/iTunes/reading.
It needs: - Flash (not likely, unless it had OS X) - Multitasking (OS X like) - Java
This is more of a niche/toy as is, made for the iTunes app store, but as a device, it just needs to be more flexible. |

| reply to en102 I'm hearing rumblings that multitasking will actually show up when the device is released. Java and Flash, fat chance. Who uses Java anyway other than as a mobile app platform (Apple has the App store) or for a very few web apps? Flash is a bigger deal, but Apple is never going to let Flash in its current incarnation onto an iPhone OS product. |

Re: Still waiting... I suspect the A4 chip is too anemic to do any of the above. |

If this thing ran a scaled down version of OS X, I'd seriously contemplate buying one. I find the base iPad to be quite reasonable given the entire thing is an LCD screen and given what it has inside of it. However, I share your concern - it needed to run Snow Leopard. Didn't even need to be a scaled down version, Snow Leopard is small enough footprint that it would have run at least sufficiently. If it had, I would have bought one. Since it didn't, I just bought the MBP instead. |
