I'm still waiting for an explanation of why anyone but the most rabid of Apple fan would buy the thing.
I'm buying one.

We don't have any apple computers, just some iPhones and iPods. I happen to think this will be a great device in the home and I can hardly wait to pick one up at the new apple store that opened nearby (that'll be a first too)...

Out of morbid curiousity, may I ask what about this device appeals to you? Not trying to be insulting, I'm just trying to figure out who Apple is trying to sell this to and why.

Considering the price, I don't really understand the appeal of the iPad over a netbook / laptop. Is the touch screen really worth the price premium and feature shortcomings?

We only have 1 PC in the house and we need another device. We don't have have room for another desktop and I think that the iPad for us will be a better choice than say a netbook.

For us its not a replacement device and we don't have a need for "power/productivity" uses with it. I see it being used for entertainment 99% of the time.

Surfing/Email/Photos/Music/Movies/Games

Probably the most compelling for us is the eBooks as my wife is an avid reader. Like I said before for what we intend to use it for I think its going to fit us perfectly.

The touch screen is the most compelling part of the device, and I think you'll be surprised at what developers will be able to create for it. I think the device will outperform expectations.

As for feature shortcomings, that's a rather broad generalization. Not every device is the be all end all with every possible feature, etc...
