[Need Info] codec pack for Win7 x64

Long story short, now that I'm running Windows 7 (x64), it seems that the K-Lite codec pack I used to use all the time up to Windows XP doesn't seem to work properly, causing a lot of videos to have really bad playback and stutter issues. After uninstalling, I found that WMP was able to play (almost) all my Top Gear episodes just fine, including the 1080i one from Season 14.

Problem is, there's still the matter of the Polar Special, which is in MKV, which WMP won't even try to play. So, is there a codec pack out there similar to K-lite that would then let me play these different videos through WMP properly?

Keeping my ears (and eyes) open for suggestions.

Codec packs aren't really useful anymore. Media Player Classic Home Cinema (»mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/) has internal codecs for almost everything. For the extremely rare codec that MPC-HC doesn't support, ffdshow tryouts (»ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/) supports pretty much everything else.

The only codec pack that has any sort of use is probably CCCP, but even then it's only really useful if you use subtitles. And even then, MPC-HC has a built-in subtitle renderer that uses the same engine as vobsub.

NOTE: In general, you want to download the 32-bit versions of software. Most media playback stuff is rather experimental when it comes to x64. So, you should download the 32-bit versions of MPC-HC, ffdshow, etc.

ffdshow was one of the many that was already included in the k-lite pack, along with MPC-HC. But the advantage it did have, was that it would add plug-in/extension support in for WMP.

When I first tried it, the thing started to stagger with some of the Top Gear eps, which strangely enough worked after I uninstalled it. But I didn't try out the 1080p Polar Special.mkv file yet... nor the 1080i regular episodes.

I have 64bit k-lite and also 32bit k-lite installed on my win 7 x64 laptop with no problems what so ever, may need to double check your settings and what not.
I watch all videos and movies in Media Player Classic x32 bit, I do not believe there is a x64 version yet.

Cannot be of help on other codec packs as I never used another one....sorry.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but, are you using x64 or x32 version of WMP?

I know k-lite x64 doesn't include much at all which is why I have both pakages.

There's a 64-bit k-lite out there? Or does the installer automatically select x64 build if you're running an x64 OS?

**Update**

Looks like there is, indeed.

Well, I did get that installed. But I still cannot get audio to play when playing a 1080i episode in WMP. So far, VLC is still the only one that plays it correctly, since MPC-HC just plays the audio, and no video... while WMP plays the video, but no audio.

I do not know your config or settings, but, I have had times where default install did samething. I use the tweak tool to change codecs for opening certain files, like ffdshow or hali for xvid/divx. You should be able to do the same with the tweak tool for a 1080i movie. Play with different config settings till' ya get results....it does work.

Well, I did give the codecTweakTool and the Win7DSFilterTweak a run and check (in that order). Tried again... same thing.

WMP gives video, but no audio.
MPC-HC gives audio, but no video.
VLC at first didn't give audio, but then checking the audio sub-menu showed two audio tracks...
#1 - [NAR] (previously selected)
#2 - [English]

Selecting #2 gets me audio.

Okay... but how do I get that to also function in WMP? Searching its options has yet to find where I could select a different audio track or the like.

These windows media center codecs are the only codecs you will ever need.

You can choose any media player you want; everything will play.

The following filetypes are enabled and SUPPORTED by the installation of Shark's Codec Solutions.
amr | mpc | ofr | divx | mka | ape | flac | evo | flv | m4b | mkv | ogg | ogv | ogm | rmvb | xvid
All of the above filetypes can be queued to the Windows Media Player Playlist using a right-click.

The codec packs contains a Settings Application to use in conjunction with your windows media center setup which will enable each user to choose from different splitters and decoders for specific filetypes. The application will also allow you to choose from 10 different speaker configurations from 'same as input' and all the way up to full 7.1 channel output.

I have also released x64 versions of the settings application so these codec adjustments are completely independent of each other on Windows 7 systems and can co-exist together on x64 systems.

More info:

»shark007.net/

I just installed this setup on a new Windows 7 (X64) system but have not given it much of a workout. I have no experience with MKV files but the programmer claims WMP playback is supported.

I became aware of these codecs from a recent post by Grail Knight See Profile apparently via a tip he got from Sir Raleigh See Profile

Sorry for not writing back in a while, but I did want to update.

Installed botht he Win7 codecs and their x64 component from that site... seems to have fixed everything. Roomie can play his flac-based music files, and I can play my 1080i eps... most of them, anyway. Some of the episodes still have that missing audio crap going on. I'm wondering if I should (re)torrent them or something.

Thanks for the thumbs up and the update.

By the way, the Win7codecs were updated the day after I posted (2010-02-07).
