But when they crossover from talking to ACTING then they must face the consequences of their actions. And when the venue hosting their ACTIONS does nothing to stop them, then the venue has to pay the price as well.
So we shut down Google because someone can use it to search about how to burn down a house?

Yeah, we don't censor the net. That's what China is for.

Comparison is rather flawed, Google doesn't advocate burning down someone's house. Can't say the same for 4-chan who has no qualms with taking things to real life.

4chan doesn't.
people that post there do.
now if you'll say 4chan admins should moderate their forums would be no different from saying Google should block 4chan.

There are plenty of message board communities that are moderated effectively so as to not allow this behavior. Huge difference between outright blocking and moderating.

Which makes anything said and done on the board acceptable, brilliant.

The shear number of posts that come in, and the massive size of the userbase prohibit threads from being instantly deleted.

This stuff doesn't get done by magic, you know.

Actually, anything illegal is not tolerated. Users who post illegal content are perma-banned and reported. It's the gray areas that cause most of the issues.

I don't think you quite understand the volume of posts made on a minute by minute basis on 4chan.

* Total posts: 398,127,475
* Current users: 45,426
* Active content: 14 GB

How many message boards do you know of that have forty five THOUSAND currently active readers? And that's just in the past 10 minutes during the stats refresh. Just wait for the 400000000get! That number will go up x5 easily.

What few moderators that board does employ can't do much more than piss to put out the fire, but they DO take care of the really horrifying garbage fairly quickly.

My guess as to what happened:
Some script kiddie was running a botnet on a spoofed 4chan IP range. Verizon sees it coming across their network and put a halt to it toot sweet. The shitheads start crying CONSPIRACY!! and the wagons start circling. Seen it happen dozens of times, and it'll happen again.

**EDIT**

In the 3 minutes it took me to write this message, the post count increased to 398,137,810. A little over 10k posts in under 5 minutes? Wait until Friday, my man...

I say that is their duty, at least for the moderators, and I am saying this as a former mod, sysop, and admin of several sites. With that being said, I have checked out 4chan in the past. It is the most pointless site ever, but the mods seem to be doing their job. Grotesque content gets routinely posted, but the worst seems to go away quite quickly, on average. It's just their users are persistent idiots that are allowed to post anonymously and keep reposting as it keeps being taken down. Now if I was to look at whether the admins/sysops are doing an adequate job, I would say no. There is much that can be done on a technical level to contain the threat a board like 4chan can pose and it just isn't done. I respect their mods because they put up with a lot, but still try and do their jobs quickly enough. However, the admins/sysops need a good swift kick in the teeth.
