Re: Geico? A joke. A serious joke. Those asking about the quote given - yes, it is monthly. My credit rating is 727; I took my driver's defense course in April 2008; and my driving record is clean - not even a lousy parking ticket. Insanity spells everything these days, smh. -- You fire a guy, you create a rival. You fire a woman, you create a housewife. |

There is absolutely NO way that is your quote for a month. Especially with a clean record, there is something wrong. That or I should be really happy I moved from Queens before I needed my own insurance, haha.
I just switched to Geico a week ago. Instead of paying 850 or so for 6 months they gave the same coverage (e.g. 100/300k) for $530. No other company even came close. |

 | reply to drake My Car is a 2009 Lancer GTS fully loaded, sun roof and yada yada, and I am Financing the car and I only pay 453 dollars for 6 months. Well for some reason next month when I pay again it is 489 for 6 months but whatever. Just about every other insurance company wanted more for 6 months then I pay for a year at Geico. When I filled out info at one of those sites that's gets quotes from a bunch of sites I got a cheaper quote from Allstate so I called the representative and was saying how Great it was and then after telling me how Allstate is always better then Geico after I give her the Vin Number she says,"wait a minute". This Vin Number shows you have a GTS but the quote you got was for a LANCER ES SPORT(The Welfare Lancer Mine is the high end) then she says ok your new Quote is 1300 for 6 months and it was for less coverage then Geico and I said No thinks I would have to be a retard to pay double then what Gecio charges me then I hung up the phone |

 | reply to drake Geico is three companies: Geico (for safe drivers), Geico Direct (2nd Tier) and Geico High-Risk. If you're credit sucks, they will charge you a lot. Geico doesn't tell anyone that but they are crooked.
There really is no discount for males till 40 unless they never have anything happen.
By the way, women are heading that way. The more they all drive the less insurance will give them cheap rates. |

Brooklyn and the city in general is the perfect storm - high accident rates and high medical costs, so insurance rates for city drivers are sky high.
At 25 years old I was quoted $7000/year from Travelers, and that was with my IEEE discount. I lived in Ozone Park which is right on the border of Brooklyn and Queens.
Especially if you are a young, unmarried male driver you're screwed. |

3 edits | reply to drake Car insurance costs vary HUGELY from one person to another, from one insurance company to another, and from one location to another. A friend of mine switched to GEICO because he got a better price from them than anyone else he checked with. He's never had any problems with their service or getting claims paid. I've never received a low quote from GEICO.
I'm with State Farm and have been with them for 22 years. I check around every couple years or so to see if I can get a better deal anywhere else, and nobody is ever able to come anywhere near what I get with State Farm. I have a brand new Ford Escape Hybrid, financed through my credit union, and my premiums with State Farm are only $61/month.
The worst quote I got was from Ameriprise and was something like $1700 for 6 months. The second worst quote was from Progressive and they were around $1200 for 6 months. I checked with Allstate and don't remember what the quote was from them, but when I declined and told the agent what I was paying State Farm she said "I don't blame you. I'd stay with them too if I got that price with them!" |

How do you think they pay for every other ad on every television and radio channel throughout America? GEICO is usually the cheapest if you're not high risk. They look at both your driving history and your credit history and if either look risky, will price their coverage to discourage you from signing up.
When I was 22, they also quoted me $1600 a month for a 1996 Accord that was financed. I am now 32 with 2 cars and 2 drivers that both have full coverage ... I pay $90/month. Before we added the second driver and car, I paid less than half that.
The quotes I received from Nationwide and Allstate were in the upper $100/month range for the same coverage, I'm not sure what it would have been had I had the second driver and second car at the time. |

JSYPremium join:2000-04-05 Elmhurst, NY | reply to drake I've had Geico for about 15 years now and they've consistently been great to me. I've never had any problems with any claims with them. Back in the day, they saved me over a 1500 dollars in premiums per year over State Farm and Allstate.
If your premium is really that high (Geico always quotes premiums to me based on a 6month policy, never a 1month policy) then your driving record must really be negative. I've never heard of a premium that high before. When I was your age, with good credit - I financed a brand new car in Queens - and my *annual* premium was highest at $3200/year with State Farm. I think I was considered risky being young and unmarried. Have things changed that much that premiums can be that high?
Obviously you'll need to get quotes from other insurance carriers. I'd be curious as to what others would offer. Somehow even if the others are lower, it's hard to believe that they would be thousands and thousands of dollars lower. |

Somehow even if the others are lower, it's hard to believe that they would be thousands and thousands of dollars lower. They actually are. When GEICO quoted me $1600 a month (yes, I verified that was per month, not every 6 months) I wound up choosing Nationwide because they quoted me about $350 per month.
I left Nationwide a few years ago for GEICO when I decided to shop around for insurance. This time, with 10 more years of clean driving and a much lengthier credit history, no one came close to GEICO's quote.
When I asked my Nationwide rep why GEICO was so expensive, she is the one who told me they price high risk drivers sky high because they don't want their business. They can provide such low rates to good drivers with good credit because they don't have to pay a lot of claims and don't have to hound people to pay their premiums. She told me this 10 years ago, but it makes sense. Between then and now the only thing that has really changed is my age, I've been driving longer, and I have a longer credit history with a better score. |

CLNYCEnd Selective Persecution join:2006-01-16 New York, NY | reply to drake I don't pay that much a year and I have Geico. My policy has the maximum liability, collision and comprehensive coverage with full glass.
Geico is the only company that I know that offers an extended warranty coverage if you buy a new car and insure it with them. The extended coverage is $42/year. They call it mechanical breakdown. They have spent probably close to 10K to fix my friend's Chrysler which seems to break every week. There is a $250 deductible but he is way ahead since the repair bills have been constant and expensive. Every major part of the car has failed and has been replaced.
I was going to use Allstate but they didn't offer extended coverage and the Allstate person said that's why people often choose Geico. He said if I planned to keep my car for several years, Geico was a better choice for me.
I was ready to sell my car since the warranty was up and I didn't want to deal with repair bills. For $42/year it made sense to keep the car. If the engine seizes or the transmission falls out all it will cost me is my $250 deductible. -- POWER CONCENTRATED IN THE HANDS OF A FEW IS TOXIC TO ALL OF US
