| Geico? A joke. A serious joke. So my bank Municipal Credit Union [MCU] approved me the auto-loan for $15k, and I must come with 20% down payment. I've found an 2006 Hyndai Sonata to be my next "v", but finding an insurance company with a reasonable quote is ... difficult. My jaw dropped when I saw the quote from Geico- wanting $1515 / month.
I understand the key factors with insurance is: my age [22]; finance or owned [financed]; I'm a male; and live in Brooklyn. I'd think $1515 would be OK for Maybach, Lambo, or any other $200k + vehicle. *sighs*

Are there independent insurance agents in your area that can shop for you? Lesser known companies like New York Central Mutual, Peerless and Farmer's might be a little less expensive. -- "I finish things... that's what I do." (Walter Kowalski, lead character in "Gran Torino") |

That depends on the customer; I switched to GEICO last year and I'm saving over $400 a year over Allstate Property & Casualty... | reply to drake There's some secret formula or assessment insurance companies use to quote you for coverage.
GEICO happens to be cheapest for me at $900/yr just for 25/50 liability. I own my car outright, no financing involved.
Every other insurance company I've asked quoted me at least $2700/yr for same coverage. It's so retarded it doesn't make any sense.
I am 30 y/o unmarried. Don't know if that makes any difference. |

NickPurveyor of common sensePremium,VIP,MVM join:2000-10-29 Smithtown, NY | reply to drake Geico is cheap for me.
For 2 cars I pay 1500$ yearly with 100/300 liability. One is full coverage with comperehensive & collision. Second one is just liability.
A lot of factors play into the formula...age, driving record, where you live. I make an effort to take the defensive driving course every 3 years to get a 10% discount. Haven't caused any accidents, all of the ones i have were when someone hit me in the back. -- -Stupidity, like hydrogen, is one of the basic building blocks of the Universe. -Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

DodgePremium join:2002-11-27 | reply to drake First of all if you got your quote online call them. Their online system is "twichy" and provides much higher rates than if you talk to a rep.
Second, check what coverage you actually need. You will have to carry comp/collision, however limits required are by the loan originator. On some leased vehicles you are required to have 300/100 by the leasing company, on financed I think it can be lower. A lot of insurance systems will pile coverages on based on what they think you need.
Check deductible levels on comp/collison coverages. You'd be surprised how the rates change by going from $500 deductible to $1000 deductible, however make sure that your loan originator does not have rules about this.
Check with independant insurance brokers, they maybe a better option for you than direct.
Do you have a defensive driving lecture on record? If you don't get it now, it will reduce your premium on the liability portion of the coverage.
And last, many people don't know about this until it's too late - make sure you have gap coverage! In case of a loss the insurance company will pay what the vehicle is worth at the moment when the loss occured, not what you owe on the loan, unless you have gap coverage. |

AVDRespice, Adspice, ProspicePremium join:2003-02-06 Onion, NJ | Geico checks your credit rating to determine coverage. It sound like they quoted you the assigned risk coverage pool. That sucks. Are you on your parent's insurance? That how I got mine when I was 22, I called GEICO and gave them my Dad's policy number. They gave me the same coverage and rates as he had. -- standard disclaimers apply. |

| reply to whizkid3 said by whizkid3:Geico is the most expensive car insurance company there is. False. It is the cheapest - at least for me. 2 vehicles with full insurance for $1100/yr... Cheapest competitor (out of many quotes) came to some $1700/yr for the same coverage). Also HUGE difference between married and unmarried, at least with Geico... They quoted me 900+/6mo for minimum liability before getting married 10 years ago, 1 month later after getting married the same coverage dropped to some $275/6mo. |

| reply to ender7074 We've been with Geico for about 5 years. Pay 900 a year for 2 cars both newer then 2005, both with comp and 100k/300k coverage.
We've filed 3 claims. All 3 were resolved within 24 hours including a previous car that was totaled. We had a check for that less then 24 hours after the hurricane passed that totaled it.
Geico for us has been EXTREMELY good and very inexpensive. I don't drive like an idiot though and my credit doesn't suck.
