[shared] Yahoo! Small Business throttling binary uploads to 25k

Take a look at this. It must be a recent change at Yahoo! Small Business, I used to be able to max out my upload speed for all FTP uploads. Now the FTP is distinguishing between binary and ascii type uploads, throttling back the binary upload to 25kB/sec. If this isn't a fluke, then I'd stay away from Yahoo! web hosting. I'm subscribed to their $9.95/m Unlimited Transfer and Unlimited storage plan (though I am on an introductory 1st year at $5/month). I'm working with technical support on this discovery, I'll keep people posted.

Re: [shared] Yahoo! Small Business throttling binary uploads to

I talked to technical support and this is indeed a "feature" they have built into the servers to protect against "abuse". Keep in mind the service is marketed as Unlimited storage and Transfer. I'm really ticked off, because apparently I'm only storing 3GB at the moment and this amount is from over 5 months of building my site. So if you ever wondered about Yahoo! their throttling can kick in at a very low level of usage, and that's for a service that costs $10 bucks a month. If you wondered, here's the exact limits Yahoo! imposes (per the technician I spoke with on the phone):

2GB storage usage: uploads capped at 25kB/sec
1GB storage usage: uploads capped at 50kB/sec
512MB storage usage: uploads uncapped.

Yep, I had noticed these changes occur over time as well, I didn't think anything of them until the 25kB/sec limit was imposed which is really low. The cap gets more and more aggressive as you take up space.

Time to find a new provider, I'd much rather be paying for a set amount of storage I was guaranteed to be allowed to use. Didn't Yahoo! at one point offer 20GB storage? Fsck. I thought this was a premium service being that Yahoo! is one of the largest Internet companies and has a huge amount of spare resources sitting around. Anyone have any recommendations for a more sophisticated and Yahoo-reliable (I mean their multi-homed for god sakes, practically DDoS proof) type hosting provider that doesn't do this? I'm not looking to save money.

That's some lame practices there. I haven't noticed any hosts doing this. I would guess that any provider out there wouldn't have caps for uploading. Yahoo really should take note and look at the other competition out there. Yahoo was decent as a search engine provider but lacks in everything else. This is a prime example of this!

Dreamhost and other low end shared hosts often have plans for $10 or less. When I had an account there my uploads were very good and of course the amount of space provided was astronomical. Usually these are officially hosting accounts but you would probably be okay just putting up some small site.
