Unrestricting use

The reality is that they have put restrictions on the phones. They are not "perhaps" going to release those restrictions? Why? Because they can end up making more money by doing so.

Take the sim card out of the device. Put it into a nokia n900. Hey you just got the ability to do skype, sip, google talk, jabber and nokia's voip. Out of the box. Then the phone is open source. So you can port over whatever. Mangler, mumble, etc etc.

Better yet. Do some research and find a company which does 3g wireless internet usb keys. Wimax is 4g. Somewhat of a gamble the devices might not even have a sim card. Take the sim card out of the usb key with the applicable data plan. 5 gigs even with heavy heavy voip usage wont mean much. You'll have all the voip you want and everything... but no phone plan.

What verizon is doing though is making sure they get both. You pay for your phone service. You then pay for the data usage also. Why wouldnt they make every opportunity for you to go over your limits into overages?

There is no cap on mobile web use on Verizon Wireless phones, only the data tethering plans which is 5GB. And Big Red is CDMA = no sim cards.

Which made me wonder why is Verizon announcing anything at the GSM conference. Is it part of a Vodafone announcement?

No SIM cards is only partially true. My BB Tour has a SIM in it.
