[Speed] Extremely high pings/terrible streaming with Comcast

1) Your location: Chico, Ca

2) In the mornings I have a decent/reasonable ping on most applications but then during midday/night time my latency begins to skyrocket and streaming videos takes a long time to do.

3) Is the issue intermittent, constant or does it occur at a specific time of day? Usually around mid-day and well into the night. Also this did not occur for quite some time before hand (at least a month or two)

4) Your modem make, model & firmware version.
Modem: WebSTAR DPC2100R2
Serial: 202207536
Hardware Ver: 2.0
Software Ver: v2.0.2r1256-081120 (cannot see a firmware version box anywhere

5) Describe any home networking if applicable.
Modem is directly connected to a router:
Router is a linksys WRT54GS2 wireless router, however I am connected via a hard line (roommates are also reporting slower speeds)

6) List any firewall and/or anti-virus software you have installed.
AVG free anti-virus (latest version)

Tier of service: Unknown, will find out later

Default gateway:
I don't know what this is, exactly, is it the ip I need to go and configure my router with? Cause if so it is 192.168.1.1

I appreciate any insight you guys can give

Have you tried taking the router out and plugging your PC directly into the modem?

Log in to your cablemodem. You'll find it somewhere there. Looks like it might be 24.7.172.1.

I haven't ever seen that in any cable modem pages. I've seen it in router pages. The OP was advised to connect a machine directly to the modem. While he is so connected he could perform an ipconfig /all on his machine and observe the default gateway IP address in the output. Also, the address that you quote is his CMTS interface. The default gateway interface is likely to have a different addy.

Okay, so after connecting my cable modem directly to my pc I found that the default gateway was:

169.254.219.83

and also when I plugged my computer directly into my modem, I was unable to connect to the internet or perform an ipconfig /renew.

You need to power cycle the modem whenever you switch the device it's connected to.

Unplug the modem for 30 seconds, plug it into your PC, power the modem back on. Should be good to go.

Ah. Okay done and now I can connect :P

Now it is showing my default gateway as
98.238.200.1

and my connection seems markedly worse while connected directly to the modem.

Signal levels (192.168.100.1) would also be helpful.

Note: my modem is not pingable atm and, unlike with a router, I have no idea how to make it so :P. Ideas?

And how can I get the signal levels exactly for that IP? :P
I'm kinda new at this.

Like I said, goto »192.168.100.1 in your browser. Copy paste signal levels...

Unfortunately, when I go to that address and press the signal tab, I get a message "This feature has not been enabled in your cable modem." and it tells me to contact my data services provider about the availability of this service on my network.

my speeds have gone to hell here in Roseville too so your not alone. Not to far south from you in Northern Ca.. funny thing is pings, are fine, powerboost is decent, its just the steady provisioned speeds during daytime hours(11am-12am) where its slow. I average speeds of 800k during those times after hours its fine. Suspect that something is broken with all these upgrades to DOCSIS 3.0 going on.

Yeah, my bad. I forgot he's apparently running on a non-Business account, so he really does have just a modem.

the webstars don't show a detailed signal page but you should get some basic info from the 192.168.100.1 page as far as upstream and downstream signal levels and maybe snr

Ah, I see.

Well I see the following two statistics:
Receive Power Level
-4.7 dBmV

Transmit Power Level
47.9 dBmV

Does that help?

those signal levels look ok. the upstream is a little high, but not bad. the signal levels don't seem to be the issue. could be a noise issue, or a network issue.pings seemed to jump up in Sacramento.

I'm in Chico also and I've been going insane and posting on tons of forums including this one because Comcast is absolutely terrible right now. The download speeds are ridiculously low and pings are massive. Through many hours of research, I am almost positive that there is something seriously wrong with Comcast's servers in Northern California. We need to get as many people as possible to bug them as much as possible and make them fix it. I am not a technical expert but I am 99% sure that this is something Comcast needs to fix.

In my case I'm not having any issues with pings. Its just downloads from most sources. Whats also strange is I can get full speed if i download files from 3 or more sources and powerboost speeds aren't that bad as problem either. Its just steady downloads.
