Re: Why Did Alta Vista Search Engine Lose To Google? said by btB :
I do not remember Altavista ever being that popular among the masses. I remember buying my first computer in 1994 and buying "Windows 3.1 for Dummies", the book explicitly said to use Alta Vista since it was the most popular and biggest search engine, in fact, Windows for Dummies even said on a sidenote: "The folks at Microsoft would advice you to use Alta Vista, but don't be surprised if a query comes with 116,000 results".
At that time I also remember seeing "Metacrawler" which was the second biggest search engine.

You must be joking right? Yahoo search is dead in the water compared to Google, as somebody said above, Google won the battle due to it's simple & clean interface. But they did ruined YouTube, I wish they had never touched it. |

I kid you not - use Yahoo everyday and maybe 2 times a YEAR I go to Google to see if the results are different - they rarely are. Generally I never have to think about going to the second page on either engine.
Yahoo has a search box - use it just like Google. -- Brian

Unfortunately yahoo, like altavista, lycos, hitbox, metacrawler and all the rest decided that serving you their content at the front of the page was a good idea. I wasn't able to get broadband until late 2001, I'm sure everyone remembers how slow pages were back in the dialup days. What was worse, is that as they started piling more stuff in, the slower the pages got.
Minimalist interfaces work the best unless there's an actual need to serve up additional content. Which isn't want a search engine is supposed to do. KISS really does work very well in some cases. Even the current bing and google UI's are pushing it. |

There's half a page of crap to sift through on the yahoo launch page. Even yahoo's compact page is so jam-crammed with crap it's not funny. Not sure if you can call ads based on search results as intrusive either. Compared to yon days of mega-super-flash-popups and later on overlays that drove me from them years ago. |

You have zero reason to search thru the page for the box for the search.
Same placement for the box within my.yahoo.com where I search from... -- Brian

You do realize that if Google hadn't bought out Youtube, Youtube would no longer exist. There's no way they could have fought off all the pending lawsuits. |

 | Top of the page is a horrible location for your search bar. If you compare the google page, and yahoo page, the top margin on goodle drops the search bar into about the middle of your screen, of course this depends on the size of your monitor, and the resolution, but when i look at yahoo the first thing i see is not the search bar, but the main news articles they have advertised. |

No it's pointing out the obvious issue with page and content design. See Yahoo/lycos/excite/et al. are all portal pages now not search engines. They want to serve their own brand of content unto the world, not serve you with search results.
What you want is to search, the search is not conveniently located at the 'general' eye level of the user going to the page. Rather it's located at the top. Out of eye-level drawing the eyes towards other content in order to draw you away from what your original intent was. That of course moves into marketing. Less clutter is good, if you don't understand the KISS principle you're clearly missing out. |
