23 recommendations | 2010 Anti Virus Poll Multiple Choice Poll Which AntiVirus program do you use? |
|
Hi folks, it's that time of year again... time for our annual polls. Coming polls include Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware and Firewall so please be patient as we roll them out one by one.
Thanks for your input, as valued members of the security community your contributions assist many people here at DSLReports and visitors from outside as well.
We welcome your comments on your particular set-up, multiple configurations and preference but let's keep it information based and not get into discussions that are better left for a separate thread.
*Please note: Some AVs have both freeware and commercial versions, some have suites. These are not broken down separately. Please vote for the AV brand you use and then post which specific version or bundle you use. If you use an AV that is not listed above we'd like to hear about it. -- The great living experience for every man is his adventure into the woman. The man embraces in the woman all that is not himself, and from that one resultant, from that embrace, comes every new action.

I voted for Avira as I still use Avira personal version 8 on my XP machine. That version goes unsupported at the end of March. I'm not sure what I will be using after that. Possibly Avira 10 (I am a beta tester for it) or Avast as I really like the new GUI and it was the GUI that always kept me from using Avast in the past. I would continue to use Avira 8 on XP if Avira would continue supporting it as I don't like how ver 9 runs on XP and ver 10, I want to see the gold version before deciding if I will be using it. I do like the latest iteration of Avira 10 GUI (GUI matters a lot to me because I frequently open my AV). The updating problem for the free version has been solved so that is no longer an issue when choosing a free AV but there is still Avira's nag screen and ver 10 has some major changes. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. I'll add my thanks too for the poll, and to all the respondents. It's valuable because this stuff changes all the time -- last year's top performer might be this year's crap, or vice versa!
I tend to go with Norton/Symantec for most systems, but I still have faith in Kaspersky as having the best detection, only I've had performance issues with some apps with KAV installed. That's why my current answer to the question "what's the best anti-virus in 2010?" is another question, "Best for what? Who's the user? How knowledgeable are they? What are the risk exposures?"
A friend of mine recently got two computers infected with a new variant of the annoying "Internet Security 2010" malware, which can be tough to remove and I was the one stuck doing it, so I'm as appreciative of good AV's and safe computing practices as anyone! -- "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law "A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

That's always going to happen, since none of them are perfect. But I used KAV recently to find a rootkit that none of the other things I tried seemed to be able to find, including Norton and Malwarebytes. It couldn't remove it, but at least it told me where it was! -- "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law "A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

I deleted some that weren't getting any votes and didn't see a need to include them.
Discussion is encouraged and that's why there is an 'other' button as well. We're looking for new additions but can't include every AV as there are so many.
